Tour overview

This 22-day small-group journey crosses six countries of Central and Eastern Europe, from Prague's spires to the fortified Saxon villages of Transylvania. Groups have up to 12 travellers aged 15 and over, with a leader throughout and local guides along the way. You travel by private vehicle and train, and stay 21 nights in comfortable hotels, including three feature stays: the Grand Hotel Viglaš near Banská Štiavnica, a 13th-century Szekler manor in the Transylvanian village of Colțești and a historic residence in Sighișoara. Twenty-one breakfasts, two lunches and seven dinners are included, along with tastings of lángos in Budapest and chimney cake in Brașov and an arrival transfer.

After a welcome dinner and an orientation walk in Prague, a train takes you to Olomouc, with its Holy Trinity Column. In Poland you visit the memorial at Auschwitz, one of the trip's most difficult but important experiences, and tour Kraków's medieval centre with a local guide. In Slovakia you explore Banská Bystrica and the UNESCO-listed mining town of Banská Štiavnica, built inside an ancient volcanic caldera.

On the way to Budapest you stop at Hollókő, a preserved village in the Cserhát Mountains, before a guided walk of the Hungarian capital. Crossing into Serbia, you see the Art Nouveau architecture of Subotica and spend three nights in Belgrade, where the Danube and Sava meet.

Romania is the heart of the journey. You visit Timișoara, cradle of the 1989 revolution, and the Dacian capital of Sarmizegetusa Regia, then Sibiu and the open-air ASTRA Village Museum. After the citadel of Alba Iulia and a night in a Transylvanian manor, you descend into the vast Turda Salt Mine, explore medieval Sighișoara and the fortified church of Biertan, and reach Brașov. Peleș Castle and a final lunch lead to Bucharest.

The physical rating is low. This journey suits travellers who want to see the lesser-known corners of Central Europe in comfort, with a small group and memorable places to stay. Free time in each stop and a leader who handles every border, transfer and booking make the long journey feel easy.
