Treasures of the Balkans: Bucharest to Belgrade – 16 Days
Eight countries from Transylvania to the Adriatic, with Bran Castle after hours, Dubrovnik, Mostar and Sarajevo, by coach with a tour director.
Tour overview
This 16-day escorted tour is a grand journey through eight countries of the Balkans, from the castles of Transylvania to the Adriatic coast and the capitals of the former Yugoslavia. You travel by comfortable coach with a tour director throughout and local experts in key cities. You stay fifteen nights in central hotels, from the Radisson Blu in Bucharest and Brașov to the Grand Millennium in Sofia, the Swissôtel in Sarajevo and the Radisson Collection Old Mill in Belgrade. Fifteen breakfasts and nine dinners are included, among them a private dinner at Queen Marie's Tea House followed by an after-hours visit to Bran Castle, a dine-around evening in Dubrovnik and a home-hosted dinner in Sarajevo.
In Bucharest a local expert shows you University Square and the vast Palace of the Parliament. Travelling into Transylvania, you base yourself in Brașov and visit Peleș Castle at the mountain resort of Sinaia, with its lavish rooms of art, armour and tapestries, and Bran Castle, linked to the legend of Dracula. Crossing the Danube into Bulgaria, you reach Veliko Tarnovo, the City of the Tsars, whose houses cling to the cliffs above the River Yantra, and climb to the ruined Tsarevets Fortress before travelling on to Sofia, with a free day perhaps to visit the Rila Monastery.

In North Macedonia you explore Skopje, where an ultra-modern centre meets an old Ottoman bazaar, and stop for lunch beside beautiful Lake Ohrid before entering Albania and its lively capital, Tirana. On the Montenegrin coast you have a free day in Budva's walled old town, then visit Kotor on its fjord-like bay on the way to Dubrovnik, where a local expert leads you along the stone streets inside the 16th-century walls.
The final days take you inland to Mostar's famous Old Bridge, reconstructed after the war, and to Sarajevo, where you might visit the Tunnel of Hope with an expert on the Bosnian War. Following the Drina River into Serbia, you finish in Belgrade, where the Danube and Sava rivers meet below the Kalemegdan fortress.
The physical rating is low. This tour suits curious travellers who want to understand the history and cultures of the Balkans in comfort, with an expert guide at every turn.

If your international flight is part of your booking through us, we re-book at no cost. If you've booked flights separately, the tour's local team holds your transfer slot until you arrive. We strongly recommend a comprehensive travel insurance policy that includes delay and cancellation cover.
