Tour overview

This 12-day tour combines the castles and villages of Transylvania and Maramures with the painted monasteries of Bucovina and the wetlands of the Danube Delta. A tour leader travels with the group, which numbers between four and sixteen, by private bus, steam train, chairlift and boat. You stay eleven nights in hotels, a guesthouse and a floating hotel, with breakfast daily and several lunches and dinners.

From Bucharest you head into the Carpathians to visit Bran Castle and stay in a mountain guesthouse, then explore Brasov and the medieval citadel of Sighisoara. In Maramures you see the carved crosses of the Merry Cemetery at Sapanta, ride a narrow-gauge steam train through the Vaser Valley and hike a ridge in the Rodna Mountains.

You visit the painted monasteries of Moldovita, Sucevita and Putna, then drive to Tulcea and board a pontoon floating hotel for two nights in the Danube Delta, one of Europe's great bird habitats. A city tour of Bucharest ends the trip.

The physical rating is medium. This trip suits travellers who want Romania's culture and nature in one journey.

Every Travelisto booking is 100% financially protected. Your money is held in a ring-fenced Trust account until you return from your trip, and we are members of the Protected Trust Services scheme (PTS 6035). Most tours also include ATOL protection where flights are part of the package.

Do I need a visa for Romania?

No, UK citizens can visit Romania visa-free for short stays, though the EU Entry/Exit System applies at the border.

What is the floating hotel like?

A simple pontoon with twin-berth en-suite cabins; there is no Wi-Fi and power is limited to when the generator runs.

How hard are the hikes?

Moderate mountain walks of a few hours, with a chairlift to start the Rodna ridge.

Are drinks included on the pontoon?

Yes, drinks with meals are included on board.

What if my flight is delayed or cancelled?

If your international flight is part of your booking through us, we re-book at no cost. If you've booked flights separately, the tour's local team holds your transfer slot until you arrive. We strongly recommend a comprehensive travel insurance policy that includes delay and cancellation cover.
