Wild Madagascar: Lemurs, Tsingy & Nosy Be – 14 Days
Indri and aye-aye lemurs, the razor-sharp tsingy of Ankarana and snorkelling with turtles off Nosy Be, in a group of up to 12.
Tour overview
This 14-day small-group journey explores the wildlife and wild landscapes of Madagascar's east and north, ending on the island of Nosy Be. Groups have between 4 and 12 travellers aged 16 and over, with an expert tour leader and local guides. You travel by private bus, boat and one internal flight, and stay 13 nights in locally owned hotels and lodges, including a lakeside reserve and a bush camp of permanent bungalows. All breakfasts, three lunches and six dinners are included, with group transfers and snorkelling equipment. Madagascar split from Africa around 160 million years ago, and most of its plants and animals are found nowhere else.
After a welcome dinner in Antananarivo, you head east to Andasibe National Park. A night walk in a community-run reserve reveals mouse lemurs and chameleons, and a longer walk in the Analamazoatra Reserve brings you close to the indri, the largest lemur, whose eerie song echoes through the rainforest. A boat then takes you to Le Palmarium Reserve on the Pangalanes Canal, where you visit Aye-Aye Island to see the strange nocturnal aye-aye, and spend a day by motorised canoe watching life along the canal.

Flying north to Antsiranana, also known as Diego-Suarez, you explore its great bay and Amber Mountain National Park, a cool rainforest of waterfalls, crowned lemurs and tiny leaf chameleons. Driving south, you stop at the red tsingy before reaching Ankarana National Park, where trails cross hanging bridges over razor-sharp limestone pinnacles and lead into caves. Antsiranana itself is a laid-back port with colonial buildings.
At Iharana Bush Camp you explore another forest of tsingy, with the chance to zip-line and abseil into a cave. A scenic drive past the cocoa plantations of Ambanja brings you to Ankify and a boat to Nosy Be, where you snorkel among green turtles and colourful reef fish around Nosy Sakatia before the trip ends. Nosy Be has fine beaches.
The physical rating is medium, with walks in heat and humidity and some long drives. This trip suits wildlife lovers and photographers who want to see Madagascar's unique animals and landscapes in depth. Malaria protection is recommended.
