Tour overview

This 24-day small-group adventure explores Madagascar in depth, from the dry west and south to the rainforests of the east, with time for both wildlife and the island's people. Groups have no more than 12 travellers aged 15 and over, with a local leader and specialist guides in the parks. You stay in hotels, bungalows and a gite, with two nights camping on the riverbanks. Breakfast is included almost every day, with seven lunches and four dinners. One internal flight, from Antananarivo to Tulear, is included. The trip is land-only, starting and ending in the capital.

From Antananarivo you head west to Miandrivazo and board a traditional flat-bottomed barge for two days on the Tsiribihina River. You camp on sandbanks, stop at riverside villages and walk to waterfalls, watching for lemurs and herds of zebu along the banks. A 4×4 then takes you to Bekopaka for the Tsingy de Bemaraha, a UNESCO-listed maze of razor-sharp limestone pinnacles. There you trek through the Small Tsingy, take a canoe on the Manambolo River and cross suspended bridges in the Big Tsingy. Next comes Morondava and sunset at the Avenue of the Baobabs.

Returning through Antsirabe and the crater lake of Tritriva, the second part of the trip flies south to Tulear. Breakfast beneath the baobabs of Reniala Private Park is followed by a walk in the spiny forest and two nights by the sea at Ifaty. Isalo National Park has sandstone canyons, natural pools and ring-tailed lemurs.

Heading north through the highlands, you visit the Antemoro paper workshop at Ambalavao and the Anja Community Reserve, home to ring-tailed lemurs, then a Betsileo village near Fianarantsoa. In Ranomafana, guided day and night walks look for lemurs, chameleons and leaf-tailed geckos. In Ambositra, the woodcarving capital of Madagascar, you visit a marquetry workshop and a silk-weaving association with lunch in the village. Andasibe, home to 11 lemur species including the indri, brings a final guided walk and a night walk. Back in Antananarivo, a hands-on chocolate workshop rounds off the trip.

Expect long, rough drives, early starts and basic facilities in places. This trip suits adventurous wildlife lovers who want to see the real Madagascar, not just its highlights.

Frequently asked questions

How do I book this tour?

Tap any "Enquire" button on the page and one of our travel specialists will be in touch within 24 hours (often same day). We'll confirm availability on your preferred date, run through anything you need to know, and only ask for the deposit once you've decided.

What financial protection do I get?

Every Travelisto booking is 100% financially protected. Your money is held in a ring-fenced Trust account until you return from your trip, and we are members of the Protected Trust Services scheme (PTS 6035). Most tours also include ATOL protection where flights are part of the package.

Are flights included?

The internal flight from Antananarivo to Tulear is included, with a 20kg checked and 5kg cabin baggage allowance. International flights are not included.

What is the river trip like?

Two days on a traditional flat-bottomed barge with a crew, camping on sandbanks with simple facilities. Pack a small bag for these nights; there is no single supplement option while camping.

How demanding is the trip?

The physical rating is medium. The Tsingy treks involve scrambling, ladders and suspended bridges, and several days have long, rough drives of up to eight hours.

What meals are included?

22 breakfasts, 7 lunches and 4 dinners, including full board on the river. Other meals are at your own cost and good value locally.

Will I see lemurs?

Very likely. Lemurs are often seen along the river, in Isalo, at the Anja reserve and in Ranomafana and Andasibe, where guided day and night walks look for them.

Is there anything else to know?

There are no cash machines between Miandrivazo and Morondava, and toilet stops on long drives can be in the bush. Please take your waste with you, especially on the river.

Can you tailor the trip?

Yes — every escorted tour can be modified into a private tailor-made version with your own dates, adjusted pace, upgraded hotels and add-on extensions. Tell us what you'd like changed when you enquire and we'll quote it both ways so you can compare.

What if my flight is delayed or cancelled?

If your international flight is part of your booking through us, we re-book at no cost. If you've booked flights separately, the tour's local team holds your transfer slot until you arrive. We strongly recommend a comprehensive travel insurance policy that includes delay and cancellation cover.
