Tour overview

This 7-day small-group tour packs many of Sri Lanka's highlights into a week, from leopard country and ancient Buddhist sites to the calm beaches of the east coast and the hill city of Kandy. A tour leader travels with you throughout, and you stay in comfortable, mostly three-star hotels with breakfast. The trip is land-only, starting in Negombo near Colombo airport and finishing at the airport on the last morning.

Negombo, a fishing town with a busy fish market and outrigger boats on its golden sands, is an easy place to arrive. From there you head north along the coast to Wilpattu National Park for an afternoon jeep safari. Wilpattu has nearly 60 lakes and is home to leopards, elephants and sambar deer. It is quieter than better-known Yala, which makes for a more relaxed and responsible visit.

From Anuradhapura you climb the shallow stone steps of Mihintale, where Buddhism is said to have been introduced to Sri Lanka, for views across the plains. You then drive to Trincomalee on the east coast to visit the Koneswaram Temple on its clifftop. A free day follows on the beach, where the water is so shallow you can wade a long way out, or in the old Portuguese and Dutch fort.

Heading inland, you ride a bullock cart through a village near Habarana and cross a lake by canoe to Hiriwaduna for a traditional lunch of curries, sambal and rice. At Dambulla you explore five cave temples filled with Buddha statues and paintings, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in use since the 1st century BC.

An early start takes you up Sigiriya, the 5th-century Lion Rock fortress, before the crowds and the heat. You pass between giant carved lion paws and climb steel stairways to the 200-metre summit. After a late breakfast you drive to Kandy, the last royal capital of the Sinhalese kings, with free time for the Temple of the Tooth, the botanical gardens or a cultural show.

The tour is graded moderate, with many steps at Mihintale and Sigiriya. It suits first-time visitors who want a short, well-rounded introduction to Sri Lanka.

Frequently asked questions

How do I book this tour?

Tap any "Enquire" button on the page and one of our travel specialists will be in touch within 24 hours (often same day). We'll confirm availability on your preferred date, run through anything you need to know, and only ask for the deposit once you've decided.

What financial protection do I get?

Every Travelisto booking is 100% financially protected. Your money is held in a ring-fenced Trust account until you return from your trip, and we are members of the Protected Trust Services scheme (PTS 6035). Most tours also include ATOL protection where flights are part of the package.

Are flights included?

No. International flights are not included. The trip ends at Colombo airport around 10am on Day 7, so book flights departing after 12:45pm.

Why Wilpattu rather than Yala?

Wilpattu has the same wildlife, including leopards, elephants and sambar deer, but far fewer vehicles, which makes the safari more enjoyable and more responsible.

How hard is the Sigiriya climb?

There are many steps, and the final section is on steep steel stairways with handrails. If you dislike heights you can stop before the last section and come back down the same way.

What meals are included?

5 breakfasts and 2 lunches, including the village lunch at Hiriwaduna. Other meals are at your own expense and good value locally.

What is the accommodation like?

Comfortable, mostly three-star hotels with en-suite rooms, including a beach resort in Trincomalee and a hotel with a pool in Negombo.

Do I need a visa?

Most visitors, including UK citizens, need an electronic travel authorisation for Sri Lanka, arranged before travel.

Can you tailor the trip?

Yes — every escorted tour can be modified into a private tailor-made version with your own dates, adjusted pace, upgraded hotels and add-on extensions. Tell us what you'd like changed when you enquire and we'll quote it both ways so you can compare.

What if my flight is delayed or cancelled?

If your international flight is part of your booking through us, we re-book at no cost. If you've booked flights separately, the tour's local team holds your transfer slot until you arrive. We strongly recommend a comprehensive travel insurance policy that includes delay and cancellation cover.
