Funchal, Madeira, Portugal
Built into a dramatic cliff west of Funchal, Hotel Orca Praia gazes over a long sweep of volcanic shoreline with direct access down to a black-sand and pebble beach. Facilities
Pool & outdoors
The focal point is the generous outdoor freshwater pool set on a wide terrace carved into the cliffs, complete with a separate shallow children’s section. Sunbeds and parasols line the deck, and pool towels are available with a refundable deposit – ideal if you prefer to travel light.
From the hotel level you can head down towards the volcanic shoreline, where a long black-sand and pebble beach runs beneath the cliffs. This stretch of coast feels wild and scenic rather than resort-style, perfect for coastal walks and wave-watching rather than traditional golden-sand paddling. Lidos and additional bathing platforms are easily reached closer to Funchal if you fancy a change of scene.
Spa, sports & wellness
Wellbeing is low-key but well covered. There’s an air-conditioned gym (minimum age 18 years) with cardio machines for a morning workout with a view, plus table tennis and snooker if you fancy something more sociable.
In the small spa area, therapists offer massage and beauty treatments (18+, extra charge) between roughly 10:00 and 18:00 – perfect after a day on the levada trails. Evenings bring regular entertainment year-round, from in-house shows and live music to visiting professional acts, giving you the option of staying put after dinner.
Other useful touches include a 24-hour reception, luggage storage and the ability to hire items such as fans or mobility scooters (extra charge) to tailor your stay.
