Trip overview

This is the classic American West in nine nights. Start in San Francisco with cable cars, the Golden Gate Bridge and a ferry out to Alcatraz. Fly to Las Vegas for three nights of shows, pools and a possible trip to the Grand Canyon, then finish in Los Angeles, with Hollywood, the studio tours and an afternoon in Santa Monica.

Short domestic flights link the three cities, so you spend your time in each city rather than on the road. You fly into San Francisco and home from Los Angeles, both with direct flights to London. If you would rather drive, we can swap the flights for a hire car on the Las Vegas to LA stretch.

Good to know

Should I fly or drive between the cities?

Flying is quickest: San Francisco to Las Vegas takes about 1½ hours and Las Vegas to Los Angeles about 1¼ hours. Las Vegas to LA is also a 4–5 hour drive, so a hire car for that stretch works well.

Do I need to book Alcatraz in advance?

Yes. Alcatraz tours often sell out weeks ahead, especially in summer. We recommend booking as soon as your dates are confirmed.

Can I visit the cities in a different order?

Yes. You can start in Los Angeles and finish in San Francisco, as both have direct flights to London. The order may change the price slightly.

Is there an age limit for Las Vegas hotels?

Many Las Vegas hotels, including The LINQ, require the person checking in to be 21 or over. We can suggest family-friendly alternatives for younger travellers.
