Trip overview

Italy's two great art cities, linked by a fast train. Spend four nights in Rome for the Colosseum, the Vatican Museums and long evenings in Trastevere, then take the first-class train north to Florence. In about an hour and a half you swap ancient ruins for Renaissance palaces, the Uffizi and Brunelleschi's dome. The two cities make a natural pair for a first trip to Italy.

You fly into Rome and home from Florence or Pisa, so there is no going back on yourself. Both hotels are central four-star boutique properties with breakfast, and private transfers take you between each hotel and the station. Florence is also a good base for a day in Siena, San Gimignano or the Chianti hills.

Good to know

How long is the train from Rome to Florence?

High-speed trains take about 1½ hours from Roma Termini to Firenze Santa Maria Novella, with departures most hours of the day.

Do I need to book the Vatican and the Uffizi in advance?

Yes, we strongly recommend it. Timed tickets for the Vatican Museums, the Colosseum, the Uffizi and the Accademia often sell out, especially from spring to autumn.

Can I fly from a regional UK airport?

Yes. Several UK airports have direct flights to Rome and to Pisa, though Florence's own airport has fewer UK routes. We will suggest the best pairing for your airport.

Can I add Venice?

Yes. Venice is about 2¼ hours from Florence by high-speed train, and you can fly home from Venice instead.
