Trip overview

Start with three nights in Rome for the Colosseum, the Vatican and evenings in the piazzas, then take the fast train south to Naples and on to Sorrento. Perched on cliffs above the Bay of Naples, Sorrento is a relaxed base for Pompeii, Capri and the Amalfi Coast, with lemon groves, limoncello and views across to Vesuvius. It is an easy, well-balanced first trip to Italy.

The train from Rome to Naples takes just over an hour, and a private transfer covers the last stretch to your hotel. You fly into Rome and home from Naples, so there is no backtracking. Sorrento's beaches are small bathing platforms rather than long sands, so this is more a sea-and-sightseeing break than a beach holiday.

Good to know

How do I get from Rome to Sorrento?

Take the high-speed train from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale, about 1 hour 10 minutes, then a private transfer of around 1¼ hours to Sorrento. It is much simpler than the local Circumvesuviana train with luggage.

Can I visit Pompeii from Sorrento?

Yes. Pompeii is about 30 minutes from Sorrento by train or road, and we can arrange a guided visit. Herculaneum and Vesuvius are close by too.

Is Sorrento good for a beach holiday?

Sorrento has small beaches and bathing platforms (lidos) at the foot of the cliffs rather than long sandy beaches. Most visitors combine a swim with day trips to Capri and the Amalfi Coast.

Can I stay on the Amalfi Coast instead?

Yes. Positano or Amalfi can replace Sorrento, though transfers are longer and hotels are usually more expensive. We will price the alternative.
