Epic Southeast Asia for 18–35s: Thailand to Cambodia – 33 Days
Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia in one loop, from Chiang Mai to Angkor Wat, for travellers aged 18 to 35.
Tour overview
This 33-day journey for travellers aged 18 to 35 is the ultimate Southeast Asia adventure, looping through Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia by train, bus, boat and two short flights. Groups have up to 16 travellers, with a local leader throughout. You stay mostly in simple two- and three-star hotels with private bathrooms, plus guesthouses, overnight trains, beach bungalows on Koh Rong, a rural homestay and a hostel in Siem Reap. Eleven breakfasts, four lunches and three dinners are included, among them a Chinatown lunch in Bangkok, a seafood lunch on Lan Ha Bay and a garden-to-table lunch near Hoi An, leaving plenty of freedom to explore the region's famous street food.
From Bangkok you take an overnight sleeper train to Chiang Mai, with two free days for temples, cooking classes and night markets, then travel via Nan into Laos. Luang Prabang's golden temples and the Kuang Si waterfalls, Vang Vieng's limestone karsts and the relaxed capital Vientiane lead to a flight to Hanoi.

In Vietnam you cruise Lan Ha Bay from Cat Ba Island, explore Ninh Binh's rice paddies and karst landscapes, and take overnight trains to the imperial city of Hue and on down the coast. In Hoi An you cycle to Tra Que vegetable village, then continue via the beaches of Quy Nhon to Ho Chi Minh City.
Crossing into Cambodia by bus, you learn about the country's recent history in Phnom Penh, then relax for two nights in beach bungalows on the island of Koh Rong. A homestay in the rural community of Isanborei gives you the chance to visit the pre-Angkorian temples of Sambor Prei Kuk, before you rise early to see the mighty Angkor Wat at sunrise. A flight returns you to Bangkok.
The physical rating is medium, with long travel days and simple accommodation. This trip suits young travellers with time to spare who want to see all four countries in one sociable, great-value journey. Some travellers join or leave in Ho Chi Minh City, so the group may change partway through. Visas are needed for Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia, so plan ahead before you travel.
