Tour overview

This 13-day adventure for travellers aged 18 to 35 travels from Bangkok to the Lao capital, with plenty of free time for activities, food and nightlife. A local leader travels with the group, which numbers no more than sixteen. You stay twelve nights in simple hotels, guesthouses and a riverside resort, plus a night on a sleeper train, with breakfast on most days, two lunches and a dinner.

In Bangkok a walking tour takes you through Chinatown and old neighbourhoods, with lunch at a local egg noodle shop, before the overnight train to Chiang Mai. Two free days let you choose from cooking classes, temples, ziplining or an elephant sanctuary. A local bus brings you to Nan, a quiet northern town of temples and galleries, and a night at a resort in Chiang Klang.

Crossing into Laos, you reach Luang Prabang for three nights, with a barbecue feast at the night market, time to swim at the turquoise Kuang Si Falls and the chance to watch monks collect alms at dawn. A high-speed train takes you to Vang Vieng for kayaking, tubing or hot-air ballooning among the karsts, and you end in the relaxed capital, Vientiane.

The physical rating is low. This trip suits sociable travellers aged 18 to 35 who want freedom to explore.
