Northern Philippines Highlights: Pinatubo, Banaue & Sagada – 10 Days
Manila, Mount Pinatubo, the Banaue rice terraces, Sagada and Baguio, in a group of up to 12.
Tour overview
This 10-day small-group trip journeys from Manila into the Cordillera mountains of northern Luzon, combining a volcano hike, ancient rice terraces and the cultures of the mountain peoples. Groups have up to 12 travellers aged 15 and over, with a local leader throughout. You stay nine nights: seven in hotels and two in a countryside guesthouse with a pool at the foot of Mount Pinatubo. Breakfast is included every day, with several lunches and an interactive dinner with a local chef.
Your adventure begins in Manila with a food tour of the Muslim Quarter and the world's oldest Chinatown, followed by a ride on an eco-friendly bamboo bike around Intramuros, the walled city built by the Spanish in the 16th century. You then drive to the countryside near Mount Pinatubo. The next morning a 4×4 takes you through Crow Valley to the trailhead for a challenging hike to the crater lake formed after the volcano's 1991 eruption. Afterwards you share a traditional lunch, served on banana leaves and eaten by hand, with the Aeta people of Tarukan village, the earliest inhabitants of the Philippines, joined by their chieftain.

On the way north you stop in Bacolor to see a church half buried by volcanic mud, where locals still worship by climbing through the upper windows. From Banaue a jeepney takes you to Sadel to trek through the UNESCO-listed rice terraces, carved by the Ifugao over 2,000 years, with lunch in Batad. In Sagada a local guide shows you the hanging coffins and Lumiang burial cave, and you visit the home of photographer Eduardo Masferre to see his rare images of Cordillera life. Another trek follows the Maligcong rice terraces to Favarey village with a Kalinga guide.
In Baguio, the cool City of Pines, you shop at the market with your leader before a cooking demonstration and dinner with a well-known local chef and his wife. A visit to a studio supporting women weavers from the Cordilleras introduces their craft before the drive back to Manila.
The physical rating is medium, with treks on uneven paths and long drives. This trip suits active travellers who want to meet local communities and see the Philippines beyond the beaches.

What if my flight is delayed or cancelled?
If your international flight is part of your booking through us, we re-book at no cost. If you've booked flights separately, the tour's local team holds your transfer slot until you arrive. We strongly recommend a comprehensive travel insurance policy that includes delay and cancellation cover.
