Tour overview

This 21-day trip for travellers aged 18 to 35 crosses from the forts and temples of northern India into the jungles, rivers and mountains of Nepal, mixing landmark sights with village stays and plenty of time on foot and on the water. Groups have up to 16 travellers, with a local leader throughout. You stay twenty nights: mostly in simple hotels, plus a heritage property in rural Rajasthan, an overnight sleeper train, a lodge near Chitwan, a night of riverside camping, two teahouses on the trek and a community homestay. A home-cooked dinner in Tordi and meals on the river section are included, leaving the rest of the food to you, from Delhi street snacks to Nepali dal bhat.

From Delhi you head into the countryside to Tordi, a little-visited village with a heritage stay and a home-cooked dinner, then on to Jaipur, the Pink City, with time for Amber Fort and an optional sunrise hike or hot-air balloon flight. A public bus brings you to Agra and the Taj Mahal, and an overnight train carries you to Varanasi, where a sunrise boat ride on the Ganges reveals the city's bathing ghats and evening ceremonies.

Crossing the border at Sunauli, you visit Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha, then head to Chitwan National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, for a jeep safari in search of rhinos, deer and birdlife. In Kathmandu you have free time to explore its temples and markets before the adventure turns active.

A drive over the rim of the Kathmandu Valley brings you to the Trisuli River for white-water rafting and a night at a riverside camp, then on to the lakeside town of Pokhara. From Shyauli Bazaar you trek on stone steps through villages and rhododendron forests to Ghandruk and Tolkha, with views across the Modi Khola valley, and spend a night in a Gurung community homestay in Hemjakot before returning to Pokhara and Kathmandu.

The physical rating is high, with trekking, rafting and long travel days. This trip suits fit, adventurous young travellers who want India's icons and Nepal's outdoors in one great-value journey.
