Luxury Yucatán Highlights: Chichén Itzá, Mérida & Tulum – 8 Days
Valladolid, Chichén Itzá, Mérida, Celestún's flamingos and Tulum in characterful hotels, with a small group of up to 12.
Tour overview
This 8-day small-group tour is a compact and comfortable introduction to Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, combining Maya ruins, colonial towns, wildlife and the Caribbean coast. Groups have up to 12 travellers aged 15 and over, with a local leader throughout. You travel by private vehicle and boat, and stay seven nights in handpicked hotels: one in Playa del Carmen, one in a converted 16th-century house in Valladolid, three in the Hotel Casa Lucía, a 17th-century mansion in Mérida, and two in Tulum. Seven breakfasts, three lunches and three dinners are included, from a welcome dinner to a farewell dinner in Tulum.
Your adventure begins in Playa del Carmen, a lively resort town on the Caribbean coast. Next day you visit the secluded Laguna Chabela and meet local people before travelling to Valladolid, a colourful colonial town of pastel facades and cenotes.

A guided visit to Chichén Itzá, one of the new Seven Wonders of the World, reveals the great pyramid of El Castillo and the ball court. You then settle into Mérida, the elegant capital of the Yucatán, for three nights. Your leader takes you on a walking tour of downtown to learn about the city's Maya and colonial history, and an exclusive experience at the Ría Celestún Biosphere Reserve takes you by boat through mangroves to see flocks of pink flamingos.
On the way to Tulum you stop for lunch in the village of Cobá and visit the Muyil reserve. In Tulum you explore the clifftop Maya ruins, set dramatically above the turquoise Caribbean, with free time for the beach before a farewell dinner.
The physical rating is low. This tour suits travellers who want to see the best of the Yucatán in a week, in comfort and with a small group, perhaps as an extension to a beach stay. Your leader handles every detail, and the short distances between stops leave time to relax. Mexico's food is a highlight in itself, from street tacos and tamales to regional moles, and the country's warm hospitality makes it easy to feel at home. The dry season, from November to April, is the most comfortable time to travel.
