Tour overview

This 12-day escorted tour covers Germany's great cities, castles and landscapes, from the capital to the Bavarian Alps. You travel by comfortable coach with a tour director throughout and local experts in key places, and several days have a relaxed start. You stay eleven nights in central hotels, including two nights in a historic brewery inn inside the walls of Rothenburg ob der Tauber and two nights in Schwangau within sight of Neuschwanstein. Eleven breakfasts and four dinners are included, from a welcome dinner in Berlin to a dine-around in Rothenburg and a farewell dinner in Munich, plus a farm-to-table lunch with wine tasting on the Rhine.

In Berlin a local expert shows you the Kurfürstendamm, the Memorial Church, the Brandenburg Gate and remnants of the Wall. In Dresden you see the Frauenkirche, risen again from wartime ruins, and the city's baroque splendours. You stop in Weimar, city of Goethe and Schiller, on the way to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe, with time to walk its ramparts and cobbled lanes.

In Frankfurt a local expert shows you the gabled Römerberg square before you settle in Mainz. A relaxing cruise along the Rhine passes steep vineyards, half-timbered villages and turreted castles, followed by a farm-to-table lunch with local wine. In Heidelberg you explore the old town and Germany's oldest university, before driving south to Schwangau in the foothills of the Alps.

A visit to King Ludwig II's fairy-tale Neuschwanstein Castle is followed by free time in Füssen. On the way to Munich you stop in Oberammergau, famous for its painted houses and Passion Play, and can visit the Dachau memorial. Your final day in Munich lets you join a walking tour or explore at leisure, before a farewell dinner.

The physical rating is low. This tour suits travellers who want to see the highlights of Germany in comfort, with memorable places to stay and every detail arranged. Two-night stays in most places and relaxed starts on several mornings keep the pace comfortable, and the hotels in Rothenburg and Schwangau put you right where you want to be.
