Christmas Markets of Austria & Bavaria: Vienna to Munich – 8 Days
Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Neuschwanstein and Munich at Christmas, by coach with a tour director.
Tour overview
This 8-day escorted tour visits the Christmas markets of Austria and Bavaria, where Advent traditions are among the oldest and most charming in Europe. You travel by comfortable coach with a tour director throughout and local experts in the main cities, and several days have a relaxed start. You stay seven nights in well-located hotels: two at the Hilton Vienna Park, two in Salzburg, one at the AC Hotel in Innsbruck and two at the Steigenberger in Munich. Seven breakfasts and four dinners are included, from a welcome dinner with wine in Vienna to Tyrolean specialities in Innsbruck and a festive dinner with wine in Munich, with a market tasting of Glühwein and a Viennese winter dessert.
At this time of year Vienna is a place of nostalgia and romance, alive with concerts, nativity displays and official Advent markets brimming with gifts and treats. You explore the markets with a tasting along the way. Travelling through the farmlands of eastern Austria and the lakes and mountains of the Salzkammergut, you reach Salzburg, where the spires and domes of the old town are often draped in snow in December. A local expert shows you Mozart's family home on the Getreidegasse and the markets around the cathedral.

A scenic drive brings you into the Inn Valley and the Tyrolean Alps. You can explore the Olympic village of Seefeld, perhaps by horse and carriage, before an evening in Innsbruck, whose old town and Golden Roof make a fairy-tale setting for its markets.
Crossing into Bavaria, you visit King Ludwig II's Neuschwanstein Castle and the painted village of Oberammergau, home of the Passion Play since 1634, before arriving in Munich. A local expert guides you through the city's Advent traditions in the quieter streets beyond the Marienplatz, followed by a festive farewell dinner.
The physical rating is low, with walking on cobbles in winter weather. This tour suits travellers who dream of snowy Alpine Christmases, with castles, music and markets along the way. Expect mulled wine, gingerbread, roasted chestnuts and handmade decorations at every stop, with old towns twinkling with lights after dark. The mix of guided visits and free time gives a comfortable pace throughout.
