Tour overview

This 14-day escorted tour journeys from imperial Vienna through Slovenia and Croatia to the Dalmatian coast and the heart of Bosnia and Herzegovina, ending in the walled city of Dubrovnik. You travel by comfortable coach with a tour director throughout and local experts in key places, and several days have a relaxed start. You stay thirteen nights in named hotels, including the Hilton Vienna Park, the Sheraton Zagreb, a hotel beside Plitvice Lakes, the Swissôtel Sarajevo and the Royal Ariston in Dubrovnik. Thirteen breakfasts and six dinners are included, from a welcome dinner in Vienna to a dine-around in Ljubljana, a home-hosted dinner in Sarajevo and a celebration dinner with local wines in Dubrovnik.

In Vienna a local expert leads you through Maria Theresa's Schönbrunn Palace and its formal gardens. You cross into Slovenia to Maribor, the country's second city, then reach Ljubljana, where a local expert reveals the Baroque elegance of the capital, its castle and bridges. A morning in Slovenia, with the option of visiting Lake Bled, leads to two nights in Zagreb, Croatia's lively capital.

Heading south, you explore Plitvice Lakes National Park, one of Europe's great natural wonders, with its cascading turquoise lakes and waterfalls, choosing between two walking routes. On the coast you visit Trogir, a UNESCO-listed island town, and spend two nights in Split, whose old town is built within the walls of Diocletian's Roman palace.

Crossing into Bosnia and Herzegovina, you explore Mostar's cobbled old town and its famous Old Bridge with a local expert, then Sarajevo, where you visit the War Tunnels Museum, part of the secret tunnel that kept the besieged city alive, and share dinner in a local home. The final stop is Dubrovnik, explored with a local expert, with a free day to walk the walls or join an optional trip to Kotor.

The physical rating is low. This tour suits travellers who want to combine Central European capitals with the beauty of the Adriatic and the history of the Balkans, with every detail arranged.
