Tour overview

This 9-day family adventure is designed for families with children aged five and over, taking you from the Amazon rainforest to the Inca heartland of Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. A local leader looks after the group, which numbers no more than sixteen, and family rooms are arranged where available. You stay eight nights: two at a jungle lodge and six in hotels in Lima, Cusco and Ollantaytambo. Breakfast is included daily, along with three lunches and two dinners, and domestic flights are included.

After a welcome meeting in Lima you fly to Puerto Maldonado and travel upriver by motorised canoe to a lodge in the Madre de Dios region. Here your family can try traditional Amazonian archery with a local community, hike to Tres Chimbadas Lake to look for macaws, monkeys and caimans, and visit a medicine garden with a local healer.

Flying on to Cusco, you have time to adjust to the altitude before an orientation walk with your leader. In the artisans' quarter of San Blas, a local musician welcomes your family into their home to play traditional drums, strings and pipes, and shows you how to make a panpipe to take home.

Driving through the Sacred Valley, you visit an Andean community near the Piuray lagoon to learn about weaving and feed the llamas, alpacas and guinea pigs, then share a lunch before continuing to Ollantaytambo. Early the next morning a train takes you to Aguas Calientes and a bus up to Machu Picchu for a guided visit to the Lost City of the Incas, before a final free afternoon in Cusco.

The physical rating is medium, with time at high altitude. This holiday suits active families who want to share the Amazon and Machu Picchu together.

What if my flight is delayed or cancelled?

If your international flight is part of your booking through us, we re-book at no cost. If you've booked flights separately, the tour's local team holds your transfer slot until you arrive. We strongly recommend a comprehensive travel insurance policy that includes delay and cancellation cover.
