Highlights of South Korea with Flights – 13 Days
Seoul, the DMZ, Seoraksan, Hahoe, Gyeongju and Busan, with flights and a tour director.
Tour overview
This 13-day escorted tour travels the length of South Korea, from the palaces and markets of Seoul and the tense border of the DMZ to mountain temples, ancient royal tombs and the seaside city of Busan. A tour director accompanies you throughout, and return flights, transfers and checked luggage are included. You stay eleven nights in comfortable three- and four-star hotels, with breakfast daily, a cooking-class lunch and two dinners, Andong's spicy jjimdak chicken and a Korean barbecue in Busan, plus a soju tasting.
In Seoul you watch the changing of the guard at Gyeongbok Palace, the grandest of the city's royal palaces, and visit the National Folk Museum before lunch at Gwangjang Market, with its sizzling mung bean pancakes. An afternoon in Insa-dong and a walk along the Cheonggyecheon stream are followed by a free day. A guided tour of the Demilitarised Zone takes you into the Third Tunnel and up to the Dora Observatory to look across into North Korea, and in the evening you taste soju at a family distillery.

Heading east through the mountains of Gangwon-do, you visit the Goseong DMZ Museum and cross to Abai Village in Sokcho on a hand-pulled barge. Seoraksan National Park, Korea's first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, offers waterfalls, the Great Bronze Buddha and an optional cable car ride. Travelling south, you visit the Confucian academy of Dosan Seowon and Hahoe Folk Village, a living 15th-century clan village famous for its masks.
Gyeongju, the ancient capital of the Silla kingdom, is often called a museum without walls. You learn to cook bulgogi, explore the grassy royal tombs and the oldest observatory in East Asia, see palaces lit up at night and visit the UNESCO-listed Seokguram Grotto and Bulguksa Temple. In Busan you walk Haeundae Beach, visit the UN Memorial Cemetery, the colourful Gamcheon Culture Village and Jagalchi Fish Market, before riding the KTX high-speed train in first class back to Seoul.
The physical rating is low, with city walking and an easy park walk. This tour suits travellers who want to see the best of South Korea in comfort.
