Tour overview

This 9-day trip for travellers aged 18 to 35 is a great-value introduction to South Korea, combining royal palaces, traditional villages, lively cities and the coast, and travelling like a local by bus and train. Groups have up to 16 travellers, with a leader throughout. You stay eight nights, mostly in hostels and guesthouses with multi-share dorms and shared facilities, plus a night in a traditional hanok in Jeonju. A couple of group dinners are included, with plenty of chances to try Korean barbecue, noodles, street food and fried chicken.

Your adventure begins in Seoul with a welcome meeting and dinner. The next morning you visit Gyeongbokgung Palace, the grandest of Seoul's royal palaces, with time to explore the traditional Bukchon hanok village, the markets of Insadong and the neon-lit streets of Hongdae.

A local bus takes you to Jeonju, known for its hanok village of more than 700 traditional houses, where you spend a night in a wooden hanok with heated floors and wander through galleries, craft shops and street food stalls. Leaving Jeonju, you take a short walk with your leader at Wibongsanseong, a mountain fortress in Wanju, before continuing to Daegu, a lively city known for its markets and food.

An early train brings you to Busan, South Korea's great port city, with a free day to explore the beaches of Haeundae, the colourful Gamcheon Culture Village, the Jagalchi fish market or the seaside Haedong Yonggungsa Temple. On the way back to Seoul you stop in Suwon to walk the walls of the Hwaseong Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, before a farewell dinner in the capital.

The physical rating is medium, with plenty of walking and public transport. This trip suits sociable young travellers who want to see South Korea's highlights at a great price. Departures run year-round, with spring cherry blossom and autumn colours the most popular seasons. Pack light, as you will carry your bags on buses and trains, and bring comfortable shoes for the palaces, fortresses and city walks. Some nights may be in rooms shared with travellers of the same gender from other groups.
