Discover Japan with Flights: Tokyo to Koyasan – 13 Days
Tokyo, Mount Fuji, Takayama, Shirakawa-go, Kyoto, Nara and Koyasan, with UK flights, most meals and a tour director.
Tour overview
This 13-day escorted tour follows Japan's classic route from Tokyo through the Japanese Alps to Kyoto, Nara and the sacred mountain of Koyasan, with return flights from the UK and nearly all meals included. A tour director looks after you throughout, with guided sightseeing every day. You stay in comfortable three-star-plus and four-star hotels, including the lakeside Rako Hananoi, the Hida Hotel Plaza in Takayama, the Rihga Gran Kyoto and the Rihga Royal Osaka. Groups have between 12 and 28 travellers aged 12 and over.
After flying overnight to Tokyo, you take a city tour revealing the temples and gardens behind its high-tech frontage. A bullet train takes you to Odawara and a boat trip on Lake Ashi, with views of Mount Fuji on clear days. You explore Matsumoto's formidable 16th-century castle, stop at a miso house, and browse the Miyagawa morning market and old merchant houses of Takayama in the Japanese Alps.

The UNESCO-listed village of Shirakawa-go, famous for its steep thatched farmhouses, leads to Kanazawa, where you learn how gold leaf is made and stroll through the traditional Higashi Chaya teahouse district. In Kyoto you visit the Zen garden of Ryōan-ji and the shimmering Golden Pavilion of Kinkaku-ji, and walk beneath the 10,000 vermilion gates of Fushimi Inari Shrine before continuing to Nara, Japan's first capital.
A highlight is Koyasan, a holy mountain home to more than 100 monasteries in a forested valley, with time to walk among the ancient cedar trees and tombs of Okunoin. The tour ends in Osaka with a visit to Osaka Castle and a short river cruise before your flight home.
The physical rating is low. This tour suits first-time visitors who want a comprehensive, comfortable introduction to Japan, with flights, meals and sightseeing arranged. Japan is famously safe, clean and efficient, and its trains run to the minute, so travelling between regions is part of the pleasure. Spring cherry blossom and autumn colours are especially beautiful times to go. With most meals arranged, you can sample regional specialities at every stop.
