Tour overview

This 15-day small-group journey combines the great cities of Eastern Europe with mountains, rivers and wine country, travelling by bus and train through five countries. Groups have between 4 and 18 travellers aged 16 and over, with a tour leader throughout. You stay fourteen nights in comfortable hotels and a pension: two in Kraków, two in the High Tatras, one in Banská Bystrica, three in Budapest, two in Bratislava, two in the Moravian wine town of Mikulov and two in Prague. Breakfast is included daily.

The trip begins in Kraków, Poland's royal capital, with an orientation walk around the medieval Old Quarter and the option to visit the Wieliczka Salt Mine. You then raft gently through the Dunajec Gorge on the Polish–Slovak border and spend a full day trekking in the High Tatras, the highest mountains of the Carpathians.

On the way south you visit Vlkolínec, a UNESCO-listed village of timber houses, Banská Bystrica, the Hronsek wooden church built without a single nail and the old silver-mining town of Banská Štiavnica, with a stop in the little wine cellars of Sebechleby. In Budapest a guided walking tour introduces Buda and Pest, followed by a free day for the baths and Castle District.

From Bratislava, where a walking tour shows you the old town and castle, you take a day trip by train to Vienna, with the chance to return by boat on the Danube. In Mikulov, surrounded by vineyards in southern Moravia, you explore the Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape and taste local wine, and visit the town's historic Jewish cemetery. The final stop is Prague, explored on foot, with a free day perhaps to visit Konopiště Castle.

The physical rating is medium, with one full-day mountain hike. This trip suits active travellers who want to see Eastern Europe's capitals along with its countryside and hidden corners. Your leader handles every connection, and two or three nights in most places give time to settle in. Departures run from late spring to autumn.
