Self-Guided Walking on Gozo, Malta: Calypso’s Isle – 8 Days
Self-guided: a week of coastal and countryside walks on Malta's sister island, from a five-star hotel with half board.
Tour overview
This 8-day self-guided walking holiday explores Gozo, the green, quiet sister island of Malta, from a single base at a five-star hotel. There is no group or tour leader: you walk at your own pace, following GPS routes and notes on a navigation app. You stay all week at Ta' Ċenċ, a secluded hotel set in 400 acres near Sannat, with stone cottages, private terraces and two large swimming pools. Breakfast and dinner are included every day. You can book the holiday on its own or with flights from London, which include airport transfers. Your hotel is a short taxi ride from the ferry port at Mġarr, and the island's buses reach most villages.
Gozo is small enough to explore on foot, with farm tracks, coastal paths and village lanes linking its sights. Your first walk starts at Mġarr, the island's port, full of colourful luzzu fishing boats and guarded by the 18th-century Fort Chambray, and follows the coast to the narrow creek of Mġarr ix-Xini, once a hideout for raiders.

Next you head to the island's quieter north-west, reached only on foot, past the great basilica of Ta' Pinu to the village of Għarb. The cliffs near Sannat are the highest on Gozo, alive with shearwaters in late spring, and a walk along them leads down to the bay at Xlendi, with views to Comino and Malta. A free day lets you take the island's buses to the Ġgantija temples, among the oldest free-standing structures in the world, Calypso's Cave and the red sands of Ramla Bay. Spring brings wild flowers to the fields and cliff tops.
Further walks take you to the Punic burial site at Wardija Point, Fungus Rock and the Inland Sea at Dwejra, and finally from Qala through lemon groves, vineyards and fig trees to the hidden beach of San Blas Bay and the old watchtowers along the coast.
The walking is graded easy to moderate, on farm tracks, coastal paths and some rocky ground, for a few hours a day. This holiday suits independent walkers and couples who want a relaxing week of gentle walks on their own schedule, good food and a comfortable base.
