This 8-day escorted holiday shows you the best of Malta and Gozo from a single comfortable hotel, so you unpack once and let the excursions come to you. The price includes return flights, airport departure taxes, transfers and coach travel, and you are looked after by a tour director throughout, with two local guides on most guided tours. You stay seven nights with breakfast and dinner daily, with a welcome drink on arrival, and the hotel pool is open in the summer months. Groups average around 22 guests aged 18 and over, and you can choose a room with a side sea view or sea front for a supplement.
Your first excursion explores Valletta, the 16th-century capital built by the Knights of St John after the Great Siege and the first planned city in Europe since Roman times. A guided walking tour takes in its Baroque streets, and you visit the Malta Experience, an audio-visual introduction to the island's 7,000 years of history. The next day you take the ferry to Gozo, Malta's greener sister island, to explore its capital, Victoria, with its serpentine streets and hilltop Citadel.

After a free day to enjoy the seaside promenade in Sliema or relax at the hotel, you travel to Rabat to see St Paul's Catacombs, among the earliest evidence of Christianity in Malta, and walk through the hushed golden streets of Mdina, the walled former capital. A free morning in Mellieħa is followed by an afternoon visit to a Maltese vineyard for a tasting.
The final excursion heads to the south coast, where sunlight turns the waters of the Blue Grotto an intense shade of blue, and to the clifftop temples of Ħaġar Qim, older than the Pyramids of Giza.
The physical rating is low. This holiday suits travellers who want an easy, sociable week in the sun with plenty of history, and the reassurance of flights, dinners and a tour director included. Free days give time to swim, stroll the seafront or explore on your own, and evenings at the hotel are relaxed, with dinner included every night.
