Trip overview

Begin with three nights in Istanbul, where Byzantine churches, Ottoman mosques and the Grand Bazaar sit either side of the Bosphorus. Then take the short flight to central Anatolia for four nights in Cappadocia, a landscape of rock chimneys, cave churches and valleys that you can walk, ride or see from a hot-air balloon at dawn. It is one of the most rewarding culture trips within four hours of the UK.

The internal flight takes about an hour and a quarter, and private transfers are arranged at both ends. In Istanbul you stay in Beyoğlu, near Istiklal Avenue and a short ride from the old city. In Cappadocia you sleep in a cave hotel above the valleys, a good base for the open-air museum at Göreme and the underground cities.

  • Grand Bazaar and a Bosphorus cruise
  • Short internal flight to Cappadocia

Best time to go: April to June and September to October are best, with mild weather in Istanbul and clear mornings for balloon flights in Cappadocia. Summers are hot; winter brings snow to Cappadocia, which is beautiful but cold, and balloon flights are more often cancelled.

Good to know

Is the hot-air balloon flight included?

No. Balloon flights depend on the weather and are confirmed locally, usually the evening before. We recommend keeping more than one morning free in case a flight is cancelled.

How do you get from Istanbul to Cappadocia?

The quickest way is a domestic flight of about 1¼ hours to Nevşehir or Kayseri, followed by a transfer of 40 minutes to an hour. An overnight bus is possible but much slower.

Do I need a visa for Turkey?

British citizens can visit Turkey for tourism for up to 90 days without a visa. Your passport should be valid for at least 150 days from your arrival date.

Can I add a beach stay?

Yes. It is easy to add a week on the Turkish Riviera around Antalya or the Aegean coast, with domestic flights from Cappadocia or Istanbul.
