Trip overview

This is South Africa's classic first trip: four nights in Cape Town, then four nights beside Kruger National Park looking for lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. Cape Town gives you Table Mountain, the winelands of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, and the drive round to Cape Point and the penguins at Boulders Beach. Kruger is a two-and-a-half-hour flight north-east, so you swap sea views for the bush in an afternoon.

We fly you direct from London to Cape Town and home from Johannesburg, so there is no backtracking. In Kruger you stay a few steps from Paul Kruger Gate, with open-vehicle game drives into the park each day. If you would like more privacy, we can move the safari to a lodge in the Sabi Sands, where rangers can drive off-road and sightings are often closer.

Best time to go: September to November and March to April suit both halves best: Cape Town is warm and Kruger's bush is thin enough for good game viewing. Kruger's dry winter (May to October) is the peak for wildlife, while Cape Town is at its sunniest from November to March.

Good to know

How do you get from Cape Town to Kruger?

Airlink flies direct from Cape Town to Kruger Mpumalanga Airport near Nelspruit in about 2h 40m. From there it is roughly 45 minutes by road to Paul Kruger Gate.

Is four nights enough in Kruger?

Four nights gives you six to eight game drives, which is usually enough for good sightings of most of the Big Five. If you can add a night or two, a private reserve such as the Sabi Sands is a good way to spend them.

Do I need malaria tablets?

Kruger is a malaria-risk area, while Cape Town is not. Ask your GP or a travel clinic about antimalarials a few weeks before you travel.

Can I add a beach at the end?

Yes. Mauritius is about four hours from Johannesburg, so a week on the beach fits easily after Kruger. See our Kruger Safari & Mauritius holiday.
