Highlights of Laos by Train: Vientiane to Luang Prabang – 8 Days
Laos by high-speed train, from the capital to the temples of Luang Prabang.
Tour overview
This 8-day trip explores Laos at an easy pace, travelling on the new Laos–China railway, with a tour leader and a group of four to sixteen. You stay seven nights in comfortable hotels with breakfast daily.
In Vientiane you see the Victory Gate, the golden That Luang stupa and Wat Sisaket, then ride the train north to Vang Vieng, set among limestone peaks on the Nam Song River, with a free day for caves or kayaking.

A second train journey brings you to Luang Prabang, a UNESCO-listed town of temples and French colonial houses. You climb Mount Phousi at sunset, visit Wat Xieng Thong and the Royal Palace, and take a long-tail boat up the Mekong to the Pak Ou Caves.
You can watch the dawn alms-giving and swim at the turquoise Kuang Si Falls. The physical rating is low.

What financial protection do I get?
Every Travelisto booking is 100% financially protected. Your money is held in a ring-fenced Trust account until you return from your trip, and we are members of the Protected Trust Services scheme (PTS 6035). Most tours also include ATOL protection where flights are part of the package.
Do I need a visa for Laos?
Yes, UK citizens need a visa, available on arrival or as an e-visa before travel.
What is the train like?
The modern Laos–China railway, with comfortable reserved seats; journeys take one to two hours.
Which meals are included?
7 breakfasts.
Can I have my own room?
A single supplement may be available; otherwise solo travellers share with someone of the same gender.
How many people travel together?
Between four and sixteen, with a tour leader.
Can you tailor the trip?
Yes — every escorted tour can be modified into a private tailor-made version with your own dates, adjusted pace, upgraded hotels and add-on extensions. Tell us what you'd like changed when you enquire and we'll quote it both ways so you can compare.
What if my flight is delayed or cancelled?
If your international flight is part of your booking through us, we re-book at no cost. If you've booked flights separately, the tour's local team holds your transfer slot until you arrive. We strongly recommend a comprehensive travel insurance policy that includes delay and cancellation cover.
Not quite the right fit? Make it tailor-made.
If this group tour doesn't match your ideal trip, our specialists will turn it into a private tailor-made journey — your own dates, your own pace, upgraded hotels where you want them, and the parts you don't love swapped out. Same destinations, just rebuilt around you.
