Tour overview

This 22-day journey travels overland through five countries of Central America, from the Maya highlands of Guatemala to the cloud forests and volcanoes of Costa Rica. A local leader travels with the group, which numbers no more than sixteen. You stay twenty-one nights in hotels, with breakfast on many days.

In Guatemala you witness a Maya ceremony at San Andrés Itzapa, ride a chicken bus to the Almolonga market, browse Chichicastenango and cross Lake Atitlán by boat. After a free day in Antigua you visit the Maya ruins of Copán in Honduras, then the colonial town of Suchitoto and the Pacific coast of El Salvador.

In Nicaragua you explore the colonial cities of León and Granada, then cross into Costa Rica for the cloud forest of Monteverde and La Fortuna, below the Arenal volcano, before ending in San José.

What financial protection do I get?

Every Travelisto booking is 100% financially protected. Your money is held in a ring-fenced Trust account until you return from your trip, and we are members of the Protected Trust Services scheme (PTS 6035). Most tours also include ATOL protection where flights are part of the package.

Do I need visas?

UK citizens don’t need visas for these Central American countries for tourist stays, though small entry fees apply at some borders.

Are border crossings included?

Yes, your leader helps at each crossing.

How do you travel?

By private vehicle, local buses and boats.

Is there free time?

Yes, in Antigua, León and La Fortuna.

Can I have my own room?

A single supplement is available on request.

How many people travel together?

No more than sixteen travellers, with a local leader.

Can you tailor the trip?

Yes — every escorted tour can be modified into a private tailor-made version with your own dates, adjusted pace, upgraded hotels and add-on extensions. Tell us what you'd like changed when you enquire and we'll quote it both ways so you can compare.

What if my flight is delayed or cancelled?

If your international flight is part of your booking through us, we re-book at no cost. If you've booked flights separately, the tour's local team holds your transfer slot until you arrive. We strongly recommend a comprehensive travel insurance policy that includes delay and cancellation cover.
