Hobart & Southern Tasmania: Port Arthur & Bruny Island – 4 Days
Port Arthur, the Tasman Peninsula, kunanyi/Mount Wellington, the Hartz Mountains and Bruny Island, from a Hobart base.
Tour overview
This 4-day small-group tour explores southern Tasmania from a base in Hobart, combining convict history, dramatic coastline, mountain wilderness and island wildlife. Groups have up to 12 travellers aged 15 and over, with a leader throughout. You stay three nights in a hotel in Hobart, so you unpack only once. Three breakfasts and a welcome dinner are included, with free time to enjoy Hobart's waterfront restaurants and Tasmania's famous oysters, cheese and cool-climate wines.
Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting in Hobart, known as nipaluna to the muwinina and palawa peoples, the traditional owners of the land. You head to Port Arthur, the best-preserved convict site in Australia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to explore the penitentiary ruins and gardens and take a short harbour cruise past the Isle of the Dead.

The next morning you drive down the Tasman Peninsula, passing through the narrow isthmus of Eaglehawk Neck to see the Tasman Arch, the Devil's Kitchen and the Tessellated Pavement, a natural rock platform that looks like tiled flooring. Back in Hobart you visit the Salamanca Market, when running, and join a bush tucker experience with a palawa guide, tasting native foods and learning about Tasmanian Aboriginal culture.
A drive to the summit of kunanyi/Mount Wellington gives sweeping views over Hobart, the Derwent River and the surrounding mountains, before you head into the remote Hartz Mountains National Park for short walks among alpine lakes and rugged peaks. On the final day a ferry takes you to Bruny Island, where you climb the 279 steps to the Truganini Lookout at The Neck for views across both halves of the island, and explore South Bruny National Park, looking out for wallabies and seabirds, before returning to Hobart.
The physical rating is medium, with short walks and some steps. This tour suits travellers short on time who want to see the highlights of southern Tasmania in a small group. Departures run from spring to autumn. Pack layers and a rain jacket for the changeable mountain weather, and good shoes for the walks and steps. Departures are limited.
