Why book Holland America Line

Why a Holland America Line voyage?

Six reasons we recommend this line to the right kind of traveller.

150+ years of cruise heritage

Founded in Rotterdam in 1873 as a transatlantic mail and passenger line — the longest continuous cruise heritage of any line at sea. The brand still carries that institutional knowledge in onboard service, classic ship aesthetic and a clear-eyed cruising-first philosophy.

Music Walk — three world-class venues

A genuine HAL signature — Lincoln Center Stage (classical recitals from the New York institution), BB King's Blues Club (the only authentic BB King's on water), and Rolling Stone Rock Room (the Rolling Stone magazine-curated rock venue). Three live-music venues per ship, all included.

Mid-size sweet spot

HAL ships carry 1,500-2,650 guests — large enough for full-spec entertainment and dining, small enough to reach ports the mega-ships can't. The traditional cruise-ship aesthetic preserved (wraparound promenades, classic atriums) on modern, capable vessels.

Alaska specialist alongside Princess

HAL has been an Alaska specialist for nearly 80 years. Multiple ships positioned in Alaska every summer, with shared Carnival-group land tours (Denali, McKinley Chalets) for cruise-and-rail packages. The deepest Alaska expertise at sea after Princess.

Have It All bundled fares

HAL's signature upgrade package: bundled drinks (Signature Beverage Package), Wi-Fi, gratuities, one speciality dinner and a shore-excursion credit. Pre-purchase saves significantly over buying piecemeal — and the bill at the end is the bill at the start.

Pinnacle dining tier

Pinnacle Grill (American steakhouse), Tamarind (Pan-Asian fine dining), Canaletto (Italian), Rudi's Sel de Mer (French seafood, fleet-wide signature). The dining hierarchy on HAL is genuinely strong — premium speciality venues with cover charges that the Have It All package largely covers.

The honest version

Might not be for you if…

No cruise line is for everyone. Here's where Holland America Line might not fit. We'll point you elsewhere if so.

You want a young, high-energy ship

HAL skews older — typical guest age is 55-75, with a calm, refined onboard atmosphere. No go-kart tracks, no waterparks, no pool-deck DJs. For high-energy resort cruising look at Royal Caribbean, MSC or NCL.

You want ultra-luxury all-inclusive

HAL is mid-premium, not ultra-luxury. The Have It All package bundles a lot but premium fares with butler service and included flights are Silversea or Seabourn territory.

You want adults-only

HAL accepts families but isn't family-themed. There's a Club HAL programme for kids 3-12 and The Loft for teens, but the ships are tilted to adult travellers. For genuine adults-only, look at Virgin Voyages, Saga or Viking Ocean.

You're looking for cutting-edge tech and design

HAL is classic by design — the ships have traditional aesthetic, decent but not industry-leading Wi-Fi, no medallion-style wearables (yet). For cutting-edge tech look at Princess (OceanMedallion) or Celebrity (Edge-class).

FAQ

Quick answers about Holland America Line

What's the Music Walk?
HAL's signature on-board entertainment concept — three world-class live-music venues on each Pinnacle, Vista and Signature-class ship: Lincoln Center Stage (classical recitals partnered with the New York institution), BB King's Blues Club (the only authentic BB King's on water, with full live band) and Rolling Stone Rock Room (curated rock cover bands). All three are included in every fare, free to attend.
How does Have It All work?
HAL's bundled fare upgrade. For a single per-night fee added to your fare, it includes: a Signature Beverage Package (cocktails, wine, beer, soft drinks up to a per-drink limit), Wi-Fi, daily gratuities, one speciality dinner per voyage and a shore-excursion credit ($100 per guest per voyage). Pre-purchase saves around 30% versus buying each piece separately. Most guests find Have It All the right value tier; pure Wi-Fi-and-drinks upgrades are available without the bundle.
Is Holland America good for Alaska?
Excellent — HAL has been an Alaska specialist for nearly 80 years and positions multiple ships in Alaska every summer. The Carnival group connection means shared land-tour infrastructure (Denali, McKinley Chalets) for cruise-and-rail packages. Behind Princess as Alaska specialists, but only just.
How does HAL compare to Princess and Cunard?
All three are mid-premium Carnival Corporation lines but positioned differently. Princess is more middle-of-the-road mainstream-premium with OceanMedallion tech; Cunard is more formal, transatlantic-heritage, four Queens. HAL sits between them — older heritage than Princess, less formal than Cunard, with the music-led entertainment as its differentiator.
Are gratuities included?
Not on the base fare — daily service charges are added per guest per day at $16-$18 depending on cabin type. The Have It All package INCLUDES gratuities, which makes it good value if you'd be tipping anyway.
What's the Mariner Society?
HAL's five-tier loyalty programme: Star Mariner (1+ voyage), 2-Star (21-74 days), 3-Star (75-199), 4-Star (200-499) and 5-Star (500+). Top tier unlocks complimentary speciality dinner, premium Wi-Fi, complimentary laundry and dedicated concierge. Status carries across Carnival Corporation brands at equivalent levels.
What's Half Moon Cay?
HAL's private Bahamas island (technically owned by Carnival, with HAL-only beach areas). Two miles of white-sand beach, water sports, food and drink venues, horseback riding through the surf (paid extra). Included on most Caribbean itineraries; selected sailings spend a full day there.
Do I need a passport?
Yes — a passport with at least six months' validity beyond your voyage end date is recommended for every HAL sailing. US citizens on closed-loop Caribbean voyages from US ports can sometimes use alternative ID, but a passport book is always safer.
