A Taste of Georgia: Tbilisi to the Caucasus – 8 Days
Tbilisi, Kakheti wine country and the Caucasus, with family meals and cooking, in a small group.
Tour overview
This 8-day small-group trip is a feast of Georgian food, wine and culture, from the capital Tbilisi to the vineyards of Kakheti and the high Caucasus. A tour leader travels with the group, which numbers between ten and sixteen. You stay seven nights in comfortable hotels, some with pools, with breakfast daily, five lunches and a dinner, many of them cooked with local families.
In Tbilisi a walking tour of the old town is followed by a cable car ride to Narikala Fortress and a tasting of lobiani, Georgia's bean-filled bread. In Kakheti, the country's wine region, you visit the hilltop town of Sighnaghi and the Gremi fortress, share a barbecue lunch with a local family, try bread- and sweet-making and meet a maker of qvevri, the clay vessels used to make wine for 8,000 years. The next day brings the Telavi farmers' market, a lunch with a Kist family in the Pankisi Valley and a cellar tasting of qvevri wines.

In Mtskheta, the spiritual capital of Georgia, you visit Jvari Monastery and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, then explore the rock-cut cave town of Uplistsikhe before a cookery lesson. The Georgian Military Highway leads north to Stepantsminda in the Caucasus, where you walk to Gergeti Trinity Church beneath Mount Kazbek and make khinkali dumplings with a local family before returning to Tbilisi.
The physical rating is low. This trip suits food and wine lovers who want a relaxed introduction to Georgia.
