Azerbaijan & Georgia: Baku, Sheki, Kazbegi, Svaneti & Batumi – 18 Days
Baku, Sheki, Georgian wine country, Kazbegi, Tbilisi, the towers of Svaneti and the Black Sea, in a small group of up to 12.
Tour overview
This 18-day small-group journey crosses the Caucasus from Azerbaijan's capital on the Caspian Sea to Georgia's mountains and Black Sea coast. Groups have no more than 12 travellers aged 15 and over, with a local leader in each country. You travel by private vehicle, with one leg by public bus or train, and stay in comfortable hotels and family guesthouses in the mountains. Breakfast is included daily, with 4 lunches and 5 dinners, several of them home-cooked. The trip is land-only, starting in Baku and ending in Tbilisi.
Baku mixes a walled medieval Old City with bold modern architecture, and you explore both on foot, including a walk at night. A day trip to Gobustan reveals UNESCO-listed rock carvings and bubbling mud volcanoes. Heading into the forested mountains, you stay in Lahij, a village of coppersmiths, with a yoghurt-making demonstration, then meet the Udi people of Nij and see the old Albanian church at Kish. In Sheki you visit the painted Palace of the Sheki Khans and watch craftsmen make shebeke, stained-glass windows assembled without glue or nails.

Crossing into Georgia at Lagodekhi, you reach the Kakheti wine country around Telavi, with its farmers' market and the Tsinandali estate. The Georgian Military Road climbs to Gudauri, and from Stepantsminda you hike up to Gergeti Trinity Church, set beneath Mount Kazbek. Three nights in Tbilisi bring a walking tour of the Old Town and plenty of free time for its sulphur baths, galleries and wine bars. You then visit Mtskheta's medieval Jvari Monastery and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and stop at a social enterprise in the Tserovani settlement for lunch.
The final week heads to Svaneti, the highest inhabited region of the Caucasus. From Mestia you drive to Ushguli, a UNESCO-listed cluster of villages with medieval defensive towers beneath Mount Shkhara, one of the highest permanently inhabited places in Europe. A winery visit with a tasting leads to two nights in Batumi on the Black Sea, with a walking tour and time on the seafront boulevard, before you return to Tbilisi by public transport.
The pace is moderate, with some long, winding drives and a 2.5-hour hike up to Gergeti. This trip suits travellers who want an in-depth, varied journey through two of the most hospitable countries in the region.

Frequently asked questions
How do I book this tour?
Tap any "Enquire" button on the page and one of our travel specialists will be in touch within 24 hours (often same day). We'll confirm availability on your preferred date, run through anything you need to know, and only ask for the deposit once you've decided.
What financial protection do I get?
Every Travelisto booking is 100% financially protected. Your money is held in a ring-fenced Trust account until you return from your trip, and we are members of the Protected Trust Services scheme (PTS 6035). Most tours also include ATOL protection where flights are part of the package.
Do I need a visa?
Azerbaijan requires a visa for most visitors, usually an e-visa applied for online before travel. UK passport holders do not currently need a visa for Georgia. Always check the latest rules for your passport.
How active is the trip?
The pace is moderate. The main walk is the hike up to Gergeti Trinity Church, about 2.5 hours on a steady climb to around 2,170 m. Other days involve walking in towns and villages.
What are the guesthouses like?
Clean, comfortable and family-run, sometimes with shared bathrooms and occasionally limited hot water. Single rooms are not available on guesthouse nights.
What are the roads like?
Mountain roads can be slow, winding and affected by weather. Your leader may adjust timings or the route for safety.
Will we taste Georgian wine?
Yes. You visit the Tsinandali estate in Kakheti and a winery on the way to Batumi, where a tasting is included. Georgia has one of the oldest winemaking traditions in the world.
Are flights included?
No. You fly into Baku and out of Tbilisi, so an open-jaw ticket works well.
Can you tailor the trip?
Yes — every escorted tour can be modified into a private tailor-made version with your own dates, adjusted pace, upgraded hotels and add-on extensions. Tell us what you'd like changed when you enquire and we'll quote it both ways so you can compare.
What if my flight is delayed or cancelled?
If your international flight is part of your booking through us, we re-book at no cost. If you've booked flights separately, the tour's local team holds your transfer slot until you arrive. We strongly recommend a comprehensive travel insurance policy that includes delay and cancellation cover.
Not quite the right fit? Make it tailor-made.
If this group tour doesn't match your ideal trip, our specialists will turn it into a private tailor-made journey — your own dates, your own pace, upgraded hotels where you want them, and the parts you don't love swapped out. Same destinations, just rebuilt around you.
