Highlights of Azerbaijan & Georgia – 10 Days
Baku, the Silk Road towns of Azerbaijan, Georgian wine country and the Caucasus in a group of up to twelve.
Tour overview
This 10-day small-group adventure crosses the Caucasus from the Caspian Sea to the mountains of Georgia, combining the oil-boom city of Baku with Silk Road towns, wine country and some of Europe's highest peaks. A local leader travels with the group, which numbers no more than twelve. You stay nine nights in hotels and guesthouses, with breakfast daily, a lunch and three dinners.
In Baku you take a night walk along the Caspian promenade and a tour of the walled Old City, then visit the petroglyphs and mud volcanoes of Gobustan, a World Heritage Site. Heading into forested mountains, you see the ancient Juma Mosque in Shamakhi and spend a night in Lahij, a village of coppersmiths, with a yoghurt-making demonstration. At Nij you meet the Udi people, descendants of the ancient Caucasian Albanians, and visit the Albanian church at Kish.

In Sheki you explore the painted Palace of the Sheki Khans and a workshop making shebeke stained glass, then browse the market before crossing into Georgia. In Kakheti, the country's wine region, you visit a family winery for lunch, the Gremi fortress and the Tsinandali estate. The Georgian Military Highway leads you into the Caucasus for two nights, with a hike to Gergeti Trinity Church beneath Mount Kazbek, before you finish in Tbilisi with an orientation walk.
The physical rating is medium. This trip suits curious travellers who want to discover two very different Caucasus countries.
