Walk Tasmania’s Bay of Fires: Coastal Hiking from Launceston – 3 Days
Three days walking the white beaches and orange-lichen rocks of the Bay of Fires, in a group of up to 12.
Tour overview
This 3-day walking break explores the Bay of Fires on Tasmania's north-east coast, famous for its white sandy beaches, turquoise water and granite boulders splashed with bright orange lichen. Groups have up to 12 walkers aged 15 and over, with a leader throughout. You stay two nights at the Bayside Hotel in St Helens, or similar, so you unpack once and return each evening to the same comfortable base, perfectly placed for the coastal trails. Two breakfasts, three lunches and a dinner are included, along with a wine tasting at a local vineyard.
Your adventure begins at 8am in Launceston, one of Australia's oldest settlements and a UNESCO City of Gastronomy, in the lands of the Litarimirina and Panina peoples. You drive north-east into Mount William National Park for the Cobler Rocks loop to Stumpy's Bay, a coastal walk through heath and along empty beaches, then climb the Mount William summit track for 360-degree views over the coast and Bass Strait, covering about 10km during the day.

On the second day you follow the Eddystone Point Lighthouse loop, a walk of about 11km through coastal scenery, clear beaches and rock formations, learning about the granite lighthouse that once guided ships through Banks Strait. In the afternoon you visit Priory Ridge winery near St Helens for a tasting of cool-climate Tasmanian wines.
Your final morning takes you to The Gardens, in the heart of the Bay of Fires Conservation Area, for a walk to Binalong Bay along a coastline of orange-lichen rocks and quiet coves, followed by the Skeleton Bay to Dora Point walk, before the return drive to Launceston in the afternoon.
The physical rating is medium, with easy to moderate walks on formed paths, occasional rocky scrambles and some time on the road. This short break suits active walkers who want to discover one of Australia's most beautiful coastlines in a small group, with the logistics handled. Departures run from spring to autumn. Pack layers and a rain jacket, as Tasmanian weather can change quickly, even in summer. A small day pack, water bottle and good walking shoes are essential.
