Tour overview

This 8-day small-group trip travels through the heart of Andalucia the way locals do, by bus and train, combining its great Moorish cities with walks through the quiet hill villages of the Sierra de Aracena. Groups have between 4 and 16 travellers aged 16 and over, with a tour leader throughout. You stay seven nights in simple, well-located guesthouses: two in Granada, one in Cordoba, two in a family-run posada in the hill village of Castaño del Robledo, where a few rooms share bathrooms, and two in Seville. Breakfast is included daily, with an arrival transfer from Malaga Airport.

From Malaga you travel to Granada for an orientation walk and a timed visit to the Alhambra, the palace of the Nasrid dynasty and one of the finest examples of Moorish architecture in the world. After a free morning, a bus takes you to Cordoba, once the capital of Islamic al-Andalus, where you visit the Mezquita, the great mosque-cathedral, and wander the rambling back streets of the old Jewish quarter.

By train and bus you then head deep into rural Andalucia, close to the Portuguese border, to the Sierra de Aracena National Park, a landscape of chestnut and cork-oak woods and tiny whitewashed villages where life moves slowly. A 12km circular walk takes you to the white village of Alájar, overlooked by its 17th-century hilltop shrine. Next morning a 6.5km walk follows the valley of the Ribera de Jabugo to Galaroza, while your luggage goes ahead.

The trip ends in Seville, home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites and one of the largest old towns in Europe. After an orientation walk, a free day lets you visit the Real Alcázar and the immense Gothic cathedral, or explore the tapas bars of Triana and Santa Cruz.

The physical rating is medium. The pace is full, with plenty of time on your feet, and the walks follow wooded trails with loose cobbles and some steep sections; you can skip the rural walks if you prefer. This trip suits active, independent-minded travellers who enjoy public transport and local life. Single rooms are available for a supplement.
