Tour overview

This 18-day small-group journey links the great cities of Spain and Portugal, travelling by high-speed train and private vehicle, with a flight from Barcelona to Lisbon. Groups have up to 12 travellers aged 15 and over, with a leader throughout. You stay 17 nights in handpicked hotels, including a family-run boutique hotel in Seville's old Jewish quarter and a vineyard hotel with outdoor pools in the Douro Valley. Eleven breakfasts, four lunches and four dinners are included, from a tapas welcome dinner in Madrid to paella in Valencia and a picnic lunch with wine in the Douro, along with an arrival transfer.

In Madrid a walking tour takes in the Puerta del Sol, the Plaza Mayor and the Royal Palace. A high-speed train carries you south to Seville for two nights, with a local expert leading you through narrow streets and patios scented with orange blossom. In Cordoba you visit the Mezquita, which has served as both mosque and cathedral, and on the way to Granada you meet the owner of a family-run olive oil mill. Two nights in Granada give time for its Moorish architecture and teahouses.

After a winery visit with tasting and lunch, you reach Valencia for a guided tour of its cathedral, central market and Silk Exchange, with a taste of horchata. A train then takes you to Barcelona, with its Gothic quarter, modernist architecture and Catalan food, before a flight to Lisbon.

In Portugal a local guide leads you through Lisbon's Bairro Alto, Chiado and the cobbled lanes of Alfama. A half-day trip to the palaces of Sintra leads on to Coimbra, the medieval capital and home of one of Europe's oldest universities. In the Douro Valley you take a tasting tour at a leading winery and a gentle boat ride to the village of Pinhão, before finishing in Porto with an orientation walk and a tile-painting workshop.

The physical rating is low. This trip suits travellers who want to see the best of the Iberian Peninsula in comfort, with a small group and memorable food and wine along the way. Free time in every city lets you follow your own interests.
