Tour overview

This 9-day small-group expedition explores the Comoros, a little-visited volcanic archipelago in the Indian Ocean between Madagascar and Mozambique, known for its marine life, rainforest and scent of ylang-ylang. Groups have up to 12 travellers aged 15 and over, with an experienced leader and local representative throughout. You travel by private vehicle, boat and two inter-island ferries. Tourism infrastructure is limited, so accommodation is the best available: three nights in hotels on Grande Comore, four nights in a beachfront lodge on Mohéli and one night in simple community-run beach bungalows at Itsamia with shared facilities. All breakfasts, seven lunches and six dinners are included, with arrival and departure transfers.

Grande Comore, the largest island, is dominated by the active volcano of Karthala. Your guide shares local myths about its jagged lava landscapes, including the Dos du Dragon, the crater lake of Lac Salé, the Miraculous Mosque and the Trou du Prophète, and you visit a ylang-ylang farm to see how the perfume oil is produced.

A ferry takes you to Mohéli, the smallest and wildest island, whose waters were declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2020. You spend four nights at a beachfront lodge, island-hopping and snorkelling in the marine park, with a barbecue lunch on the uninhabited island of Ouenefou, and heading out to look for spinner and spotted dolphins. From mid-July to October, humpback whales come to breed in these warm, shallow waters. A forest hike leads to Livingstone's flying foxes, among the largest bats in the world and found only here and on Anjouan. Evenings are spent on the beach, listening to the waves.

At Itsamia, a park eco-guard explains the village's role in protecting the green turtles, more than 20,000 of which nest on its beaches each year, and you may see them come ashore at night. Back on Grande Comore, you share lunch at a local home and visit Iconi, the ancient capital of the sultans.

The physical rating is medium, with forest hikes and boat trips. This trip suits wildlife lovers and adventurous travellers who are happy with simple facilities in exchange for a genuinely unspoilt destination.
