Route overview

Section 3 climbs from the plains of Lleida into the heart of the Catalan Pyrenees. On the way you walk through one of Europe’s most dramatic gorges, star-gaze under some of the clearest skies in Spain, and then spend three days among glacial lakes, Romanesque churches and the stone villages of the Val d’Aran.

Driving distances are modest but the roads are mountain roads, so we keep the days unhurried and build in the walks, the 4×4 taxi into the national park and the rafting so you can simply turn up.

Day-by-day itinerary

6 days from Lleida, Spain to La Seu d'Urgell, Spain

  1. Day 1 Lleida to the starry sky (107 km)

Start at La Seu Vella, Lleida's old cathedral, and the Templar castle of Gardeny. Stop in Balaguer for coca de recapte, then take the panoramic road past the Camarasa reservoir to the Congost de Mont-rebei, where a narrow path is cut into the gorge wall. After dark, look up: the Montsec is a Starlight Reserve, with an observatory centre near Àger. Overnight in La Pobla de Segur. Try: pa amb tomàquet with Les Garrigues olive oil.

  2. Day 2 Aigüestortes and the Boí Romanesque (62 km)

Drive over the Coll de la Creu de Perves into the Vall de Boí. Take a 4x4 taxi into Aigüestortes National Park for an easy walk among lakes and meadows. In the afternoon, the UNESCO-listed Romanesque churches: Sant Climent and Santa Maria in Taüll, and Santa Eulàlia's six-storey tower at Erill la Vall. Try: mountain cheese and meat cooked 'a la llosa' on a hot slate.

  3. Day 3 Into the Val d'Aran (60 km)

A valley that faces the Atlantic, with its own language, Aranese. From Vielha, drive to the meadows of Artiga de Lin and walk to the Uelhs deth Joeu waterfall. In the afternoon, see bears, lynx and wolves at Aran Park in Bossòst, then back to Vielha — on Tuesdays, join the 'pintxo pote' bar crawl. Try: pintxos in Vielha's old town.

  4. Day 4 The Colomèrs cirque (74 km)

Visit the stone villages of Arties and Salardú, with the frescoes of Sant Andrèu, or relax at the high-altitude Banhs de Tredòs. In the afternoon, walk from the Colomèrs refuge among glacial lakes, then cross the Bonaigua pass to Sort. Try: olha aranesa, the hearty valley stew.

  5. Day 5 Rafting and cheese (54 km)

Raft the Noguera Pallaresa from Llavorsí or Sort — one of Europe's classic white-water rivers, with family-friendly stretches. Detour to Gerri de la Sal and its salt pans, then on to La Seu d'Urgell for the cloister of Santa Maria, Catalonia's only fully Romanesque cathedral. Try: Alt Urgell i Cerdanya cheese, Catalonia's only protected cheese.

Frequently asked questions

How do I book this road trip?

Tap any "Enquire" button and a Travel Designer will be in touch within 24 hours (often the same day). Tell us your dates, how many nights you would like and the style of hotel, and we will build the trip and quote it. Nothing is booked until you confirm.

What financial protection do I get?

Your money is held in a ring-fenced Trust account until you return, and we are members of the Protected Trust Services scheme (PTS 6035). When international flights are included, ATOL Protection is included.

Is this section suitable in winter?

Yes for skiing and snowy villages — Baqueira-Beret and Boí Taüll are nearby — but the lake walks and rafting are summer activities. We'll adapt the route to the season.

How fit do I need to be?

The walks we suggest are easy to moderate and can be shortened. Rafting has gentle family sections.

Do I have to drive every day?

No. The stages are a guide, not a timetable. We can add rest days, cut a long day in two, or base you in one place for two nights so you can explore without packing up.

Can I book a private driver-guide instead of self-drive?

Yes, a private driver-guide is available on request for any section, or just for the mountain or city days.

Can I combine this with another section?

Yes. The five sections join up into one loop, so you can do two back to back, or all five over about a month. See the Grand Tour of Catalonia page.
