Trek Pakistan’s Nangma Valley & Karakoram – 10 Days
Skardu, Khaplu and three nights of full-service camping in the Nangma Valley, in a group of up to 12.
Tour overview
This 10-day adventure takes you into the Karakoram mountains of northern Pakistan on a short but spectacular trek to the Nangma Valley, a remote valley of meadows and granite walls known to climbers around the world. Groups have up to 12 travellers aged 18 and over, with a licensed local leader, trekking guides, cooks and porters. You stay nine nights: six in twin-share hotels in Islamabad, Skardu and Khaplu, and three in full-service camps with spacious two-person tents and a mess tent. All meals are included, with fresh Pakistani dishes cooked at camp, along with airport transfers, domestic flights and trekking permits.
Your adventure begins in Islamabad with a city tour of the Lok Virsa Museum and the Faisal Mosque. Weather permitting, a short and scenic flight takes you to Skardu, the gateway to the Karakoram, with time for the bazaar and the Manthal Rock Buddha. You drive to Khaplu, stopping where the Shyok and Indus rivers meet and joining a cultural walk and lunch in the village of Yugo, then visit the Khaplu Fort museum.

From the village of Kanday at 2,680m, you meet your crew and trek across wooden and suspension bridges up a narrow valley to Mingulo Broq, a willow-lined pasture where you may meet shepherds. That evening, local Balti performers put on a music and dance show at camp. A mostly flat walk alongside a glacial stream brings you to the Nangma Valley campsite, with views of the north ridge of Shingu Charpa.
A free day lets you hike to the base camp of Amin Brakk at 4,590m, at the foot of one of the most spectacular rock walls in the world, or relax and explore around camp. You then trek back to Kanday for lunch with a local family and drive past the Safranga Cold Desert, one of the highest deserts on Earth, to Skardu. After flying back to Islamabad, you visit a truck art workshop and the Taxila Museum, with its collection of Gandharan art.
The physical rating is medium, with trekking at altitude and some steep sections. This trip suits fit, adventurous travellers who want a taste of trekking in the Karakoram.
