Windstar Cruises

Sail the small, sail the special — yacht-style boutique cruising

Windstar runs the only fleet of motor-sailing yachts at sea: white sails up at sunset, classic sea-shanty soundtrack, three slim 312-guest sail-cruisers (Wind Surf, Wind Spirit, Wind Star) plus three all-suite Star-class motor yachts (312 guests each). Itineraries reach where the megaships can't.

Why book Windstar Cruises

Why a Windstar Cruises voyage?

Six reasons we recommend this line to the right kind of traveller.

Sail-power yachts — genuinely

Wind Surf, Wind Spirit and Wind Star are computer-controlled sailing ships. Sails go up at the start of each voyage (in the famous Sail Away ceremony with Vangelis's "1492" playing), and the ships do use the sails when wind is favourable. The romance is real, not a marketing line.

Small enough for tiny ports

Windstar fits into harbours mega-ships can't — the inner port of Bonifacio in Corsica, St. Barts, the Spanish Balearics' smaller marinas, half the Greek Cyclades. Often you arrive and depart in the heart of town, not at a container terminal.

Star-class motor yachts — all-suite, fully refurbished

Star Pride, Star Breeze and Star Legend were stretched and refurbished in 2019-21 — all-suite accommodation, more dining options, an infinity pool, redesigned spas. The motor yacht alternative to the sailing fleet, same yacht-club ethos.

Watersports from the marina platform

Most calling days, the ship drops a stern marina platform and you can step straight into the sea — kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, snorkel gear, water skis included. Unique to small-ship lines.

The honest version

Might not be for you if…

No cruise line is for everyone. Here's where Windstar Cruises might not fit. We'll point you elsewhere if so.

You want big-ship choice

These are 312-guest yachts. Two restaurants, one show lounge, a small spa and library. For sprawling choice and entertainment, look at Royal Caribbean or NCL.

You're cruising with young kids

Windstar has no kids' clubs. The vibe is adult — couples, friends-of-friends, late-life travellers. Children are welcome (no minimum age) but won't find peers or supervised programmes.

You expect all-inclusive everything

Drinks are not included in the standard fare (a beverage package is available as an add-on). Gratuities, WiFi and most excursions are paid separately. The "All-In" fare bundles drinks + WiFi + gratuities at a small premium.

FAQ

Quick answers about Windstar Cruises

Do the sails actually work?
Yes — the three sailing yachts use computer-controlled sails when wind direction and speed permit (typically 30-40% of the time at sea, depending on route). Engines do the rest, but the experience of being under sail at sunset is genuine, not a show.
What's a Sail Away ceremony?
A Windstar tradition. As the ship leaves the first port of each voyage, sails are raised dramatically while Vangelis's "Conquest of Paradise" (the "1492" theme) plays over the deck. Champagne, applause, very photogenic.
Sailing yachts vs motor yachts — which to pick?
The sailing yachts (Wind Surf, Spirit, Star) have more romance but slightly smaller cabins, no balconies. The motor yachts (Star Pride, Breeze, Legend) are all-suite, balconies on most cabins, more space. Same itineraries are sometimes available on both.
How is Windstar different from SeaDream or Sea Cloud?
SeaDream is smaller (112 guests, full all-inclusive). Sea Cloud is a working tall ship (real square-rigged sailing). Windstar sits between — small-ship intimate with more space than SeaDream, and faster than Sea Cloud because it has full engines.
