Sea Cloud Cruises

Real square-rigged sailing — the way it was, and still is

Sea Cloud (built 1931 for Wall Street financier E.F. Hutton and his wife Marjorie Merriweather Post) and Sea Cloud Spirit (built 2021 in the same tradition) are working four-masted square-rigged sailing ships. 64-94 guests, traditional teak-and-brass design, sails set by hand by the crew. The most authentic sailing cruise experience at sea.

Why book Sea Cloud Cruises

Why a Sea Cloud Cruises voyage?

Six reasons we recommend this line to the right kind of traveller.

Sails set by hand, daily

No computer-controlled rigging. The crew climbs the masts and sets the sails — visibly, audibly, on most port-to-port days. The "All Sails Set" maneuver is the visual signature, and the engineering of the ships is from a different era.

Sea Cloud is a national treasure

Built in 1931, the Sea Cloud was the largest private yacht in the world. She has hosted presidents, kings, and the entire Hollywood golden age. Cruising on her is a working museum experience — the wood, brass and atmosphere are original.

Boutique scale and refined service

Sea Cloud carries just 64 guests, Sea Cloud II 94, Sea Cloud Spirit 136. Crew-to-guest ratio approaches 1:1. Service is German-led, atmosphere is European-refined, evenings are quiet and conversational.

Caribbean winters, Mediterranean summers

A classic sailing-ship pattern. Winter in the Caribbean (especially the windward islands), summer in the Mediterranean (Greece, Croatia, Italy, France, Spain). Occasional repositioning voyages on the trade winds.

The honest version

Might not be for you if…

No cruise line is for everyone. Here's where Sea Cloud Cruises might not fit. We'll point you elsewhere if so.

You want modern cabin amenities

Sea Cloud cabins (especially the originals) are 1930s-design — beautifully appointed but compact. Sea Cloud Spirit's cabins are larger and modern. For pure modern luxury, look at Silversea or Crystal.

You're mobility-restricted

Tall ships have steeper companionways, fewer lifts, narrower passages. The original Sea Cloud especially is not wheelchair-accessible. Discuss with us before booking.

You want active entertainment

No shows, casino, kids' clubs. Quiet evenings, lectures during the day, dinner-and-conversation. The pace is unhurried by design.

Dining

Tall-ship dining — fresh, regional, often outdoors

Sea Cloud Cruises dines like a private yacht should — open-seating, table service, no surcharges. Provisions are sourced regionally, menus reflect the itinerary. Captain's cocktail receptions and white-tablecloth outdoor barbecues on calm-water nights are the highlights.

The Restaurant
Main dining — open seating, refined regional menus, white-glove service.
The Lido / Buffet
Indoor/outdoor casual venue — buffet breakfast and lunch, themed dinners on selected nights.
Outdoor barbecues
On settled-water nights the crew sets up open-deck barbecues — fresh fish, regional grills, candlelit tables on the open deck.
Captain's receptions
Sail-set canapés and champagne — held when conditions allow the crew to set all 29 sails (Sea Cloud) or 30 sails (Sea Cloud Spirit).
Sundowners
The Top of the Sails bar — daily aperitif tradition; the crew briefs the next day's sailing programme over drinks.
In-suite dining
Full menu available in suite by request.

What you actually do all day

The sails set most days

Crew climbs the rigging by hand to set 29 sails (Sea Cloud), 27 (Sea Cloud II) or 30 (Sea Cloud Spirit). Watching from the deck — or from the bowsprit — is the experience.

Lecture programme

Sail-history specialists, maritime archaeologists, regional cultural lecturers join every voyage. Particularly strong on the historic Sea Cloud.

Watersports & swimming

Swim platforms from the side at anchor; snorkel gear and small craft (where conditions allow). Sea Cloud Spirit adds a small pool.

Spa & wellness (newer ships)

Sea Cloud II and Spirit have small spas with treatments. Sea Cloud is historic and trades spa space for character — fitness room only.

Practical

Good to know

Sailing reality
These are real sailing ships — the engines are auxiliary. When wind is fair, sails are set and engines off; when not, engines power through. Watching the crew set sails by hand is the centrepiece.
Cabin variety
Sea Cloud has historic original suites and traditional cabins — sizes vary significantly. Sea Cloud II is more consistent. Sea Cloud Spirit is all-suite. Pricing reflects this.
Languages
Bilingual (English/German) on most voyages — all signage, menus, announcements in both. Selected all-German sailings run for the German market.
Dress code
Smart casual at dinner — no formal nights. Sea Cloud Spirit may have one optional dressy evening per voyage.
Children
Children are welcome on most sailings; no kids' programmes. Sea Cloud Spirit best-suited for families due to space.
Booking via Travelisto
Same fare as Sea Cloud direct, with UK packaging on flights, the right cabin selection on the historic Sea Cloud (size varies a lot), and bilingual-vs-German-only itinerary advice.

FAQ

Quick answers about Sea Cloud Cruises

How is Sea Cloud different from Star Clippers or Windstar?
Sea Cloud is the most authentic tall-ship experience — traditional rigging, hand-set sails, period vessels. Star Clippers is also genuine tall ship but larger and more modern. Windstar uses computer-controlled sails. Sea Cloud is closer to a maritime museum that you sail in.
Can I climb the masts?
On Sea Cloud Spirit, yes — supervised mast-climbs are part of the experience for those who want them. On the original Sea Cloud, the rigging is too historic for guest climbs. Watching the crew set sail from deck is the experience.
How long are typical voyages?
Sweet spot is 7-14 nights. Repositioning voyages (Atlantic crossings) can be 17-21 nights — these are particularly atmospheric on a sailing ship and have a loyal following.
