Havila Voyages

The Norwegian Coastal alternative — modern hybrid fleet

Founded 2021, Havila Voyages operates the Norwegian Coastal Route (Bergen to Kirkenes and back, 11 nights) alongside the better-known Hurtigruten. Four modern hybrid-electric ships (Castor, Capella, Polaris, Pollux) calling at 34 ports daily, year-round. Cleaner technology and brand-new ships make it a strong newer option for Norwegian coastal sailing.

Why book Havila Voyages

Why a Havila Voyages voyage?

Six reasons we recommend this line to the right kind of traveller.

Brand-new hybrid-electric fleet

Castor, Capella, Polaris and Pollux are 2022-23 builds — battery-electric for low-emission operation in the Norwegian fjords (mandatory in some fjords from 2026 onwards). Quieter, lower-impact than older Norwegian coastal ships.

The classic Norwegian coastal route

Bergen to Kirkenes and back — 11 nights, 34 ports, the route operated daily since 1893 as the Norwegian coastal mail and passenger lifeline. Includes Atlantic Ocean, Lofoten Islands, Tromsø, Hammerfest, Honningsvåg, Kirkenes (Russia border).

Northern Lights season Sept-Mar

Sailing through prime aurora borealis territory September through March. Havila offers Northern Lights guarantee on some packages — if you don't see the lights on your voyage, you get another voyage free.

Newer, often less crowded than Hurtigruten

As the younger brand on the same route, Havila ships are often less crowded than the equivalent Hurtigruten sailings. Same coastline, same ports, slightly different onboard atmosphere.

The honest version

Might not be for you if…

No cruise line is for everyone. Here's where Havila Voyages might not fit. We'll point you elsewhere if so.

You want luxury polar expedition

Havila is coastal-passenger service, not expedition. For polar zodiac landings, look at Hurtigruten Expeditions, HX, Quark or Hapag-Lloyd Hanseatic.

You want pure leisure

Havila ships call at 34 ports — that's a port every few hours, often only 30-60 minutes per stop. Constantly arriving and departing is the rhythm. For relaxed-pace cruising, river or boutique cruise lines fit better.

You want a long brand history

Havila only launched in 2021. Hurtigruten has been doing the same route since 1893. For heritage, Hurtigruten. For modern hybrid ships, Havila.

FAQ

Quick answers about Havila Voyages

Hurtigruten or Havila — which to choose?
Same route, same ports. Hurtigruten has the longer history (since 1893) and bigger fleet (11 ships). Havila has the newer hybrid-electric ships (2022-23 builds, lower emissions, more modern interiors). Either is fine — we can quote both for your dates.
Can I do a one-way voyage?
Yes — daily one-way services Bergen-Kirkenes (6-7 nights) or Kirkenes-Bergen (5-6 nights). Most travellers do the full round trip (11 nights) to see the Norwegian coast in both directions and different light.
How is the Northern Lights guarantee structured?
On selected voyages October-March, if the Northern Lights aren't visible during your voyage, Havila gives you another 6-7 night voyage free. Specific conditions apply — we confirm at booking.
