Boutique upper-premium ocean cruising built around longer port stays
Azamara is small-ship upper-premium cruising specialising in Destination Immersion® — longer days in port, frequent overnight stays and access to smaller ports that the big lines can't reach. Four R-class sister ships at 702 guests each, sailing Europe, the Mediterranean, Asia, Australia/NZ, Africa, the Americas and the Caribbean with 200+ itineraries a year. Their hallmark AzAmazing Evenings® — complimentary cultural events ashore in iconic local venues — are included on every voyage.

Why book Azamara Cruises
Why a Azamara Cruises voyage?
Six reasons we recommend this line to the right kind of traveller.
Longer port stays — Destination Immersion®
Azamara's defining feature: 10+ hour port days and frequent overnight stays in port. You sleep in Venice, Hong Kong, Istanbul or St Petersburg rather than waking up sailing out at dawn. More time for evening dining ashore, second-day excursions, neighbourhoods bigger ships never see.
Small-ship access to smaller ports
At 702 guests, R-class ships dock in places the megaships physically cannot — Bonifacio (Corsica), Portofino, Hvar, the Greek small islands, Hoi An, Cartagena harbour. Less queue, no tendering, walk directly off the gangway into the old town.
AzAmazing Evenings® included
One complimentary cultural evening per voyage — typically ashore in an iconic local venue (a private palazzo in Italy, a Berber feast in Morocco, traditional music in Vietnam). Late-port nights tie in seamlessly. Conceived by Azamara in 2011 and unmatched on competitor lines at this price point.
Country-Intensive itineraries
Azamara specialises in deep single-country voyages — Greece Intensive, Italy Intensive, Japan Intensive — that sail one country slowly with multiple smaller ports rather than skimming six countries in 10 days. The contra-intuitive answer to the "everything once" cruise.
Upper-premium without big-ship feel
R-class ships were originally built as Renaissance Cruises six-star vessels — wood panelling, butler service on suite categories, country-club casual feel. Refurbished as Azamara took ownership in 2007. Closer in feel to small-luxury (Silversea) than to mass-premium (Celebrity, Holland America) — at upper-premium pricing.
Cruise-tours and pre/post programs
Azamara offers extensive pre- and post-cruise land tours through their Cruise Global, Land Local® programme — multi-night stays in Florence, Beijing, Cape Town, Cusco etc. Add 3-7 nights either side of a cruise to make a complete trip rather than just a cruise.
The honest version
Might not be for you if…
No cruise line is for everyone. Here's where Azamara Cruises might not fit. We'll point you elsewhere if so.
You want big-ship variety
R-class ships at 702 guests have three restaurants, one main lounge, one small theatre, one casino, one pool deck. No water park, no specialty bars, no Broadway-style shows. The trade-off for the deeper port programme. For big-ship variety look at Celebrity, Royal Caribbean or Princess.
You want all-inclusive luxury
Azamara's base fare includes one AzAmazing Evening, gratuities, standard wine/beer/spirits at meals, soft drinks, bottled water and select coffee speciality. Premium spirits, vintage wines, premium dining covers and shore excursions are charged extra. For everything-in-one-price luxury at sea look at Regent, Silversea or Seabourn.
You want a family-with-kids cruise
No dedicated kids' club, no children's programming, no waterslide. Azamara welcomes families but the on-board atmosphere is firmly adult — most guests 50+. For multi-generational family cruising look at Royal Caribbean, NCL or Disney.
You want short 3-7 night escapes
Azamara itineraries skew longer — typically 7-21 nights with many 10-14 night voyages. The destination-immersion model rewards longer voyages. Short city-break cruises are not a fit; for 3-5 night escapes look at NCL or MSC.

FAQ
Quick answers about Azamara Cruises
How is Azamara different from Celebrity, Holland America or Princess?
All four are premium-tier brands but Azamara is smaller (702 guests vs 2,000-4,000) and built around the Destination Immersion® concept — longer port days, frequent overnights, AzAmazing Evenings, deep single-country voyages. Celebrity, HAL and Princess are bigger ships with more onboard variety (Broadway shows, dozens of bars, big buffets, kids clubs) but shorter port stays. Use Azamara when the destination is the focus; use the others when the ship and onboard variety matter as much.
What's an AzAmazing Evening?
A complimentary cultural shoreside event included on every voyage — typically a music or dance performance in an iconic local venue (a palazzo, a fortress, a traditional theatre), often timed to coincide with a late-port night so you can stay ashore afterwards. Examples: a Vivaldi concert in a Venetian church, a Berber feast in the Atlas Mountains, a Greek folk-dance evening in a private island setting. One per voyage, no upgrade fee. On 7-8 night sailings the experience occasionally takes place onboard if local infrastructure doesn't permit a shoreside event.
What is Destination Immersion®?
Azamara's branded approach: 10+ hour Extended Destination Days in port, frequent overnight stays (sleeping in port rather than sailing through the night), late departures (after dinner) and Country-Intensive itineraries that focus on one country at a slow pace. The whole programme is designed around spending more time off-ship in port, with the cruise mostly as overnight transport between port immersion days.
How big are the R-class ships?
All four (Journey, Quest, Pursuit, Onward) are sister ships built between 1999-2000 by Renaissance Cruises (the brand they were originally constructed for). 702 guests, ~30,000 GRT, 11 decks. Acquired by Azamara from Celebrity in 2007 (Journey/Quest) and 2018/2022 (Pursuit/Onward). All refurbished consistently and to a high standard — wood panelling, classical/country-club aesthetic, no modern futuristic feel.
Are gratuities included?
YES on the current standard Always Included fares — cabin steward + dining staff gratuities are built into the fare. Premium spirits, speciality dining (when not the included visit) and shore excursions are charged extra. Premium fares (Concierge, suites) add Wi-Fi, premium drinks packages and onboard credit at increasing levels.
How is Azamara's loyalty programme?
Azamara Circle is recognition-based with four tiers (Adventurer, Explorer, Discoverer, Discoverer Plus). Tier earned by total cruise nights — solo travellers earn double points. Top tier (Discoverer Plus, 300+ nights) gets unlimited Wi-Fi, unlimited laundry, unlimited speciality dining, complimentary mini-bar, top-priority embarkation. Onboard recognition (party, host, lounge access) from first voyage.
Can I add pre or post hotel stays?
Yes — Cruise Global, Land Local® offers pre-cruise and post-cruise land programmes through Azamara, typically 3-7 nights. Examples: Tuscany before/after a Mediterranean voyage, Bali before a Southeast Asia cruise, Cusco/Machu Picchu before a Peru cruise, Cape Town before/after an Africa voyage. Travelisto books these as combined cruise + land + flights packages with ABTA/ATOL protection.
How do I book Azamara through Travelisto?
Tell a Travel Designer the destination and rough dates (whether you want a Country-Intensive single-country focus, a multi-country regional cruise, or a Grand Voyage of 30+ nights) and we come back with itinerary options, suite categories, current fare promotions and the full package including flights and any pre/post land programmes. ABTA/ATOL protected. Suites and Continent or Country-Intensive itineraries typically book 8-12 months ahead.
