Barbados holidays
Calm west-coast beaches, rum shacks and cricket, fine dining and Atlantic surf — the Caribbean’s most British-friendly island.
Overview
Welcome to Barbados
Barbados is one of the Caribbean’s best-loved islands for UK travellers: direct flights, English spoken everywhere, a strong food and rum culture, and beaches for every taste. The sheltered west coast, known as the Platinum Coast, has calm turquoise water, turtle snorkelling and some of the Caribbean’s smartest hotels and restaurants around Holetown and Speightstown. The south coast, from Oistins to St Lawrence Gap, is livelier, with wider beaches, bars and the famous Friday-night fish fry.
The wild Atlantic east coast is a different world: rolling surf and giant rock formations at Bathsheba, quiet villages and clifftop views. Inland are Harrison’s Cave, Hunte’s Gardens, Andromeda Botanic Gardens, sugar-era plantation houses and the Mount Gay and St Nicholas Abbey rum distilleries. Bridgetown, the capital, and its Garrison are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Kensington Oval is a pilgrimage for cricket fans.

Why we love Barbados
Choose the coast first: the west for calm water and fine dining, the south for value and fun. Then get out to Bathsheba and a rum shack — that is the real Barbados.

FAQs
Barbados — your questions
When is the best time to visit Barbados?
December to April, the dry season, with sunshine and around 29–30°C. Barbados lies east of the main hurricane path, but the hurricane season still runs from June to November.
How long is the flight to Barbados?
About 8 hours 30 minutes direct from London Gatwick, London Heathrow or Manchester.
West coast or south coast?
The west coast has calmer water and the most luxurious hotels and restaurants. The south coast has wider beaches, better value and more nightlife. Many people split their stay between the two.
Can I combine Barbados with other islands?
Yes. St Lucia, Grenada and the Grenadines are short flights away, and Bridgetown is a major cruise port, so a cruise and stay is easy to arrange.
