Timor-Leste Expedition: Mt Ramelau & Atauro Island – 9 Days
A sunrise climb of Mt Ramelau, coffee farms around Maubisse and a beach homestay on Atauro Island, in a small group of up to 12.
Tour overview
Timor-Leste, which became independent in 2002, is one of Asia's newest and least-visited countries. This 9-day small-group expedition explores its mountains, coffee country and coral coast with a local leader and specialist guides. Groups have no more than 12 travellers, most meals are included, and you travel overland by 4×4. The trip is land-only, starting and ending in Dili, with airport transfers included.
The trip begins in Dili, the capital, set between hills and the sea. You visit the Alola Foundation, which supports women and children, and the Chega! exhibition in a Portuguese-era prison. The exhibition tells the story of the Indonesian occupation and the resistance, and you also see the historic Motael Church. Then the road climbs into the Tatamailau range to Hato Builico, the highest village in the country, for a guided walk and a night in a simple guesthouse.

At 2:30am you set off with a local trekking guide to climb Mt Ramelau, at 2,986 metres the country's highest peak, reaching the summit for sunrise. On a clear day you can see the coast on both sides of the island. The next morning village elders welcome you with a dawn ceremony of song and dance. Around Maubisse you walk through coffee plantations with local farmers, eat lunch in a farmer's home and stop at Projeto Montanha before returning to Dili.
A boat takes you to Atauro Island, known for some of the most biodiverse coral reefs in the world and for whales and dolphins offshore. You spend two nights with host families in a village homestay near the beach. You snorkel the reefs on a guided tour and from a fisherman's boat in the Beloi Marine Protected Area, and visit women's cooperatives making jewellery and embroidery by tuk-tuk.
Back in Dili, you climb the Stations of the Cross to the 27-metre Cristo Rei statue and have dinner on the beach at sunset. A final city tour visits the Tais textile market and the Santa Cruz Cemetery, a place of remembrance for the independence struggle.
The physical rating is medium, and you need good fitness for the Ramelau hike. Guesthouses are basic, with fans, squat toilets and bucket showers, and Atauro has nightly power cuts. It suits adventurous travellers who want a real sense of a young nation and its people.

What financial protection do I get?
Every Travelisto booking is 100% financially protected. Your money is held in a ring-fenced Trust account until you return from your trip, and we are members of the Protected Trust Services scheme (PTS 6035). Most tours also include ATOL protection where flights are part of the package.
Are flights included?
No. International flights to and from Dili are not included, but arrival and departure transfers are. Send your flight details at least 14 days before departure.
How hard is the Mt Ramelau hike?
It starts at 2:30am and takes about five hours return to reach the 2,986-metre summit for sunrise. Good fitness is needed. Temperatures can drop to about 5°C, so bring warm layers, gloves and a hat.
What is the accommodation like?
Four nights in hotels, two in basic guesthouses with fans, squat toilets and bucket showers, and two in a village homestay on Atauro Island. Atauro has power cuts from about 10pm to 7am, and towels are not provided.
Do I need a visa?
Visas are issued on arrival for about USD 30, paid in cash, and there is no money exchange at the airport. Your passport needs six months' validity. The currency is the American dollar, and cards are rarely accepted.

Most meals: 8 breakfasts, 7 lunches and 7 dinners, because options outside Dili are limited. Highlights include a rooftop welcome dinner, lunch at a coffee farmer's home and home cooking on Atauro.
Is there a luggage limit?
Yes: about 7kg of carry-on and 15kg of main luggage, because of the 4x4 vehicles and boats.
Can you tailor the trip?
Yes — every escorted tour can be modified into a private tailor-made version with your own dates, adjusted pace, upgraded hotels and add-on extensions. Tell us what you'd like changed when you enquire and we'll quote it both ways so you can compare.
What if my flight is delayed or cancelled?
If your international flight is part of your booking through us, we re-book at no cost. If you've booked flights separately, the tour's local team holds your transfer slot until you arrive. We strongly recommend a comprehensive travel insurance policy that includes delay and cancellation cover.
Not quite the right fit? Make it tailor-made.
If this group tour doesn't match your ideal trip, our specialists will turn it into a private tailor-made journey — your own dates, your own pace, upgraded hotels where you want them, and the parts you don't love swapped out. Same destinations, just rebuilt around you.
