When to go and getting there
The Costa Blanca is known for one of Europe’s mildest climates, with long, hot summers and sunny winters that are popular with walkers and golfers. July and August are typically around 30 °C; May, June, September and October bring warm sea and quieter beaches. Flights to Alicante take around two and a half hours from the UK. Benidorm is about 45 minutes from the airport, Altea and Albir around 50 minutes, and Calpe about an hour.
Eating and drinking
This is the home of rice dishes: try arroz a banda (rice cooked in fish stock), arroz negro made with squid ink, and Valencia’s famous paella. Turrón, the almond nougat from nearby Jijona, is a classic treat. Altea’s old town has charming restaurants with views over the bay, and Calpe’s fishing port is perfect for fresh seafood after the afternoon fish auction.
