Australis

Patagonia expedition — Tierra del Fuego, Cape Horn, Beagle Channel

Chilean-founded (1990) and Punta Arenas-based, Australis operates two purpose-built expedition ships (Stella Australis, Ventus Australis) on 3-7 night voyages through Patagonia's southernmost fjords, Tierra del Fuego, Cape Horn and the Beagle Channel. The most accessible way to see the bottom of South America by ship.

Why book Australis

Why a Australis voyage?

Six reasons we recommend this line to the right kind of traveller.

The bottom of South America by ship

Australis sails Patagonia's fjords from Punta Arenas (Chile) to Ushuaia (Argentina) and back. The route passes Tierra del Fuego, includes a Cape Horn landing weather-permitting, and explores Glacier Alley with its hanging glaciers cascading from the Andes.

Cape Horn landing — when weather permits

A zodiac landing at Cape Horn — the southernmost point of South America — is on every Australis itinerary. Weather and sea state govern whether the landing happens (probably 80% of voyages succeed). Stand on the rocks where Drake and Magellan rounded.

Short, easy expedition

Australis voyages are 3, 4 or 7 nights — most accessible expedition cruise timing in the region. Combine with land Patagonia (Torres del Paine, Buenos Aires) for a longer South American holiday.

Bilingual operation, English-friendly

Spanish and English announcements, English-speaking expedition team, multinational guests. Different feel from northern-hemisphere expedition cruises — more relaxed, more Latin American in atmosphere.

The honest version

Might not be for you if…

No cruise line is for everyone. Here's where Australis might not fit. We'll point you elsewhere if so.

You want Antarctica

Australis goes to Cape Horn and Tierra del Fuego — not Antarctica. For Antarctica, look at Antarctica21, HX Expeditions or Quark Expeditions (all depart from Ushuaia, where Australis terminates).

You want luxury polar cruising

Australis is comfortable but not luxury. For luxury Patagonia / Antarctica combo, look at Hapag-Lloyd Hanseatic, Atlas Ocean or Silversea Expeditions.

You want longer voyages

Maximum 7 nights on Australis. For longer southern voyages, Hurtigruten Expeditions, HX, Australis-Ushuaia-Antarctica combinations are options we can package.

FAQ

Quick answers about Australis

When can I cruise this region?
Australis operates Oct-April (Southern Hemisphere summer). Best months are Dec-Feb for maximum daylight and most-temperate conditions. Glaciers are accessible year-round during the season; Cape Horn landings are weather-dependent always.
Australis vs. Antarctica21 — both depart Ushuaia, right?
Antarctica21 starts Punta Arenas with a flight to Antarctica's King George Island, then cruise. Australis is purely Patagonia — Tierra del Fuego, Glacier Alley, Cape Horn — and terminates Ushuaia (not Antarctica). Some travellers combine: Australis for Patagonia, then Antarctica21 for the polar leg.
Will I really land at Cape Horn?
Around 80% of voyages successfully land. The other 20% experience too-rough seas or wind — the ship still anchors and circles Cape Horn, but the zodiac landing isn't safely attempted. Built into the experience and respected by experienced travellers.
