Tour overview

This 9-day small-group trip crosses the Arctic north of Scandinavia by train, from Tromsø in Norway to Stockholm. Groups have no more than 12 travellers aged 15 and over, with a leader throughout. You travel mostly by local train and bus, just as Swedes do, including two of Europe's most scenic lines: the Ofoten Railway and the Inlandsbanan. You stay in hotels, with two nights in a historic mountain lodge inside Abisko National Park. Breakfast is included daily from Day 2, with a traditional Sámi lunch. The trip is land-only, starting in Tromsø and ending in Stockholm.

Tromsø, some 350 km north of the Arctic Circle, is the starting point, with time before the welcome meeting for its museums and harbour. A bus takes you to Narvik, where you board the Ofoten Railway, which climbs from the fjord past mountains and waterfalls and over the border into Sweden. Two nights at a mountain lodge in Abisko give you a full day on the Kungsleden, Sweden's great long-distance trail, walking through Abisko Canyon and past an old marble quarry to Lake Njakajaure, then back over open moorland, with optional walks along the river and lake shore the next morning.

The heart of the journey is the Inlandsbanan, a slow and scenic railway that runs south through Swedish Lapland in retro carriages, with stops along the way, including one at the Arctic Circle. After a night in Gällivare and another in Vilhelmina, you visit the Vilhelmina Sámi Association, where two hosts in traditional dress guide you around an open-air museum of huts and artefacts and share stories of reindeer herding over a lunch of deer meat and bread. The train continues to Östersund on Lake Storsjön, a UNESCO City of Gastronomy, where a free day allows for the Jamtli open-air museum, a lakeside walk or a swim.

A long day of train connections brings you south to Stockholm, where your leader takes you on an orientation walk before a final evening in the capital, perhaps with an optional farewell dinner. Gamla Stan, the waterfront and the city's museums are all within easy reach.

The physical rating is low, with one moderate day of hiking on natural trails. This trip suits travellers who love train journeys and want to see the wild Arctic north at an unhurried, sustainable pace.
