Tour overview

This 12-day small-group tour crosses Patagonia from Chile to Argentina in comfort, combining the granite towers of Torres del Paine and the vast glaciers around El Calafate with two great capital cities. A tour director travels with the group throughout, with local experts in Santiago and Buenos Aires, and two domestic flights save long journeys. You stay in comfortable, well-located hotels, including two nights at Las Torres Patagonia inside Torres del Paine National Park. Breakfast is included daily, with four lunches and five dinners, among them a Patagonian lamb barbecue and a farewell dinner with a tango show.

The tour begins in Santiago with a welcome dinner and a guided tour of the Chilean capital, including a visit to the craft village of Pueblito Los Dominicos to see traditional horsehair weaving. A flight south to Punta Arenas leads to Puerto Natales on the Última Esperanza fjord, where a boat trip takes you past glaciers and waterfalls, with a lamb barbecue at Estancia La Península. Santiago sits beneath the snow-capped Andes.

Two nights at Las Torres Patagonia, within Torres del Paine National Park, give you time to explore one of the world's great wilderness areas, with its granite towers and horns, turquoise lakes, glaciers and herds of guanaco, on guided walks and drives. Crossing into Argentina, you reach El Calafate on the shores of Lago Argentino, the gateway to Los Glaciares National Park. The hotel's large windows look straight out at the park's famous granite towers.

Here you explore the glaciers of Patagonia, and visit the Perito Moreno Glacier, a wall of ice 70 metres high that advances across the lake, where you can watch huge blocks of ice crash into the water from the walkways. A flight takes you to Buenos Aires for a guided tour of its grand avenues and colourful neighbourhoods, ending with a farewell dinner and tango show at El Viejo Almacén.

The physical rating is medium, with optional walks in Torres del Paine and windy weather. This tour suits travellers who want to see Patagonia's highlights in comfort, without camping or long overland journeys. Single rooms are available for a supplement.
